Hey, #chemchat, we’re having a discussion at work about how to prevent needle sticks. Every job I’ve been at has tried and failed. (Well. Some effectively disincentivized needle stick *reporting* which is obviously not the same)

We want to craft good rules that people want to follow. Any ideas?

I review articles sometimes, and apparently it’s very easy to say “ChatGPT, write me a review article about ____.”

It is not yet very easy to make one that’s actually worth anything. No context, no compare and contrast, no storyline. Just a bunch of references. (And usually they’re totally borked)
I also note what they found: that the LLM can rehash, summarize, stuff that's already been written.

It cannot interpret. It can't put the correct context around the work.

Basically, ChatGPT in some ways CAN be a science writer: It will be one of the SHITTY ONES.

At my blog, I write more about my concerns for aspiring entering grad students in chemistry for Fall 2026. To reiterate - if you don't have a plan for next fall RIGHT NOW, you need to talk to your professors and advisers and develop a plan NOW: chemjobber.blogspot.com/2025/11/towa...

I sort of can't believe McMaster publishes 3D files of most of their parts. Like, as long as the thing I want could be made out of plastic, I can just print one. It's kinda awesome.

Six people died from tampered Tylenol and the company pulled 30 million bottles off the market. ChatGPT is accused of urging seven people towards suicide, and OpenAI just assures us they’re still working out the kinks. Billions in investment, zero accountability.

The leather case for my iPhone 14 Pro Max is finally starting to disintegrate. If I knew I’d be keeping this phone for more than three years, I think I’d have bought two.

Today is a good day to think about Rosalind Franklin’s contributions to science.

But also, if you’re appalled by that story, boy howdy do I have some terrible news about how grad school works.

Excuse me? So the company the President currently owns is teaming up with a cryptocurrency company to create a prediction market, which will take bets... on things the President himself has quite a lot of control over?

Gosh, I'm sure nothing bad will happen.

If they go ten more minutes, they’ll have to call in the night shift baseball players. A little less experienced but usually you do basic stuff like batting practice and fly ball drills during nights.
