Here’s my my pitch for why you care about your state attorney general.

The entire conservative judicial machine *depends* on conservative state attorney generals.

John Roberts can’t take a case asking to destroy voting rights if a state attorney generals doesn’t bring it.

I’ll believe that covid deaths are down when the entire medical apparatus is actively screening for it the way they do flu. Not now, when entire states are running a covid denial platform and refusing to test at all.
Maybe unpopular take but I think "during COVID" is fine!
Death data show a clear acute phase from spring 2020 until spring 2022. Since then deaths have steadily trended downward and this winter fell below flu deaths. You can take COVID seriously and still talk about the worst of it in the past tense

Here's my back brace/posture corrector prototype. I'm trying to gauge interest before I set up the pre-orders within the next week. There will be 3 patterns available. It will be 40-50$ USD.

For the size, please select your size or mention your measurement?

This is just to say

I have petted
The cats
That live at
My friend’s home

And which
I am
allergic to

Forgive me.
They were soft.
So cuddly
And so cute.

Being the excel guy at work is weird because how am I the resident “expert”* in Wordpress and all things web design?

*pretty sure “expert” means I’m the only person in office who doesn’t dissociate while touching a computer.

I adore “Legacies” by Nikki Giovanni and have used it before with students. Any time I think of doing something with my own family, I wonder if it’s something that will live beyond them or if it’s something I want to only experience with them while I have them. #PoemADayJuly
Morning! We're going to skip the last Poets.org selection because, as @heymrsbond.com rightly pointed out to me and @thevogelman.bsky.social, "Nikki Giovanni has to appear in a month where we talk about poetry."

So that's what we're doing! Today's #PoemADayJuly:

So much within this, including the way it asks the reader to experience this travesty. #PoemADayJuly

What stood out most for me? The repeated placement of periods after the word "run"—a pause and therefore a symbolic paradox that exposes the purposeless of running: "there is nowhere to run to" (17)

The structure today feels chaotic, like roots (or thoughts) growing where they will, within the space that they have, looking for purchase to leave containment.

I also like the use of line breaks. It has the feel of shelves with varying amounts of stuff left on them.

"Nothing would sleep in that cellar, dank as a ditch,"

For today's #PoemADayJuly, another shift: an older poem, a shorter poem, and a tone shift, too (perhaps? maybe not?)

Day 6: “…piled against slippery planks.”

An action that happened off the page. Life that’s been intentionally stowed away in a dark place to be forgotten, but refuses, hunting for a sliver of light in the dark.

#PoemADayJuly 5. I’m drawn to the poem’s contrasts between literal and figurative places with terrible Wi-Fi. This made me think more about what “terrible Wi-Fi” means. It can be both silence and noise, but both represent a lack of connection, showing how grief appears in many places/times/ways.

Day 5 #PoemADayJuly

This is a knotty poem for me, the kind that really requires multiple readings.

First thing that stand out to me are the religious/spiritual reference points that almost serve as punctuations of experience juxtaposed with “despite my disbelief.” There is loss and it remains.

“The stretches of highway on the long drive home after burial.” - for sure feeling this both literally and figuratively as we buried my mom in Alabama 2 months ago then drove home to Georgia. Again a reminder that poetry stands in the gap when we lack the words. #PoemADayJuly

“The cluttered attic. Most of the past.” When people leave us- children grow up, parents die, houses sell, families move- what do we keep? The “static” remains- joy and grief intertwined. #PoemADayJuly

#PoemADayJuly Places with terrible Wi-Fi

I notice that this is a young person's poem.

I don't know how to honor their grief and reconcile my experience with static as a signal reaching past its limits to still be heard.

The change from analog to digital transmission is evident here.

The indictment here. #PoemADayJuly

Yet I'm the one who dreamt our basic dream
. . .
Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true,
. . .
That's made America the land it has become.

(So strong, so brave, so true is doing some work here.
Like
Forgive me, they were delicious
So sweet and so cold)
"Let it be that great strong land of love / Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme" (7-8)

I would guess that most of us have read this poem. Some of us (*raises hand*) have brought it into our classrooms.

"Let America Be America Again" by Langston Hughes

Let's read it again. #PoemADayJuly

We're 4 days into this #PoemADayJuly journey, and I wanted to share 4 thoughts so far:

⓵ The sheer volume of folks jumping in with their observations and annotations and illuminations? it is overwhelming in the best of ways. More than any of us could have hoped for.

⓶ I have lost count...
Starting Tuesday: #PoemADayJuly with myself, @heymrsbond.com and @thevogelman.bsky.social 😎

The first seven poems listed here—we'll discuss one each day, and everyone is welcome! Building community by talking about poetry is a pretty cool thing, so let's do it!
