hot reminder in these troubling times in the us: the answer is not to buy a gun. stay safe out there ❤️
i have seen a couple people contemplating it right now so i am just showing up to say that the answer to the unrest in the united states is not to buy a fucking gun. do not go buying a gun right now while you are frightened and tense and stressed out. i know the other side has got guns so it might seem like a good idea for you also to have one. but guns do not defend; guns escalate. in twelve years in the criminal justice system, i have only ever had one case where self-defense use of a gun was even remotely a legitimate claim, and they've been arguing about it for two years now. in that same time i have had six cases where a child shot and killed themselves or others because the gun was unsecured and they didn't know it was dangerous. i have had numerous reckless use cases where the fact that someone wasn't killed was a miracle. guns in the household are more likely to be used to commit suicide than to defend yourself. don't bring that home. "but i'll take a gun safety course" "but of course i'd never leave a gun around unsecured" even if you actually did follow through on these promises - and trust i have heard these promises on nearly every single weapons case i have ever handled but they just "didn't get around to it" - YOU are the danger. you are SCARED. you are TENSE. you are probably at best unfamiliar with guns and at worst uncomfortable even handling one and it takes only one mistake, only one misjudgment, only one second for a gun to destroy everything. the gun is dangerous enough; the gun in the hands of someone who is scared is a fatality. i get it. the danger out there is real. things are terrifying right now. but don't bring the danger inside with you. don't escalate the peril of this moment. especially if you have kids at home. especially if you have vulnerable people at home. especially if you are scared. do not go buy a fucking gun.
