Am I the only one who thinks it's kind of weird that everyone, publications included, does their end-of-year retrospective with weeks left in the year?

Anyway every housing policy fight is a proxy battle over who gets to live in your neighborhood and what lifestyles are acceptable.

I would watch 1 million Avatar movies in 3D. No one can James Cameron like James Cameron.

Currently ~100 pages into Battle Cry of Freedom by James M. McPherson and I'm struck by the echoes of the past we still feel today.

But tbh, every time I read a book about the Civil War era I'm disconcerted by the many parallels to our own times.

Do people still call this "The Singles Safeway?"

Anyway, ugly can be beautiful and beautiful can be alienating, so let's not let aesthetics get in the way of progress.
“We have to get past ‘I think it’s ugly,’ and [the project] stops. I want to live in a city where architects can dream. If you don’t let that happen, you end up with lowest-common-denominator buildings.” - @mateosfo.bsky.social on the density bonus project proposal at SF's Marina Safeway.
Actually, SF needs more Miamification — starting in the Marina
Mayor Daniel Lurie slammed a proposed Safeway redevelopment as “just not in line with what we are doing here in San Francisco.” But why is it not in line?

Great 🧵
Clay letters from ancient Mesopotamia are alive with idiom, sayings, and everyday language that I love.

Here are just a few random ones so you can enjoy them too.

If you've watched videos from these "estranged parent influencers" or whatever they are, it's pretty clear that their narcissism precludes any accountability. They don't want to reconcile. They want to be right, and they want it to be about themselves.
Just like we were well ahead of the curve on drawing attention to dentists being a bunch of fucking wingbats we were also ahead of the curve in pointing out much of the conservative movement is just assholes who've driven their kids outta their lives. -OS

imo the total paralysis of Congress is a major contributor in The Problems. any society requires governance, but almost the only thing Congress does is pass massive handouts to whatever industry bribed them up to their back teeth most recently

Five years ago, I went from "laptop keyboard" to "low end mechanical keyboard" and it was a huge improvement.

For my birthday, I received a "mid-tier mechanical keyboard" and lo, it is also a huge improvement.

My USC poli-sci professor—Dukakis' '88 campaign manager!—said, "Polling in the 30s [%] is 'friends and family' territory."
Trump 0-3 on indicting Tish James and just had his ass handed to him by Indiana Republican legislators he threatened and bullied. Also new low in AP poll at 36% approval.

Tell him to build some freaking housing in his state. Then we can talk about him leading anything.
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

“Trump’s success is destroying, not building. That’s easy. And you can destroy in nanoseconds,” Gavin Newsom says on this episode of “The Ezra Klein Show.” “But to be a builder, that’s where greatness is. That’s where greatness lies.”

So what is the easiest, most realistic way to fix housing costs?

Of course, right after I post this the show cuts to a Coruscant metro station. 🤦🏻‍♂️
For such a dense, mixed-use city-planet, everyone on Coruscant sure seems to travel exclusively by private vehicle.

Hollywood as it has been since the foundation of the studios over a hundred years ago is dead.

Maybe what comes next will be a strange symbiosis of art and commerce like the old version, but I fear it will merely be a corpse animated by an algorithm.

Why did no one mention to me that newborn infants make "haunted by a poltergeist" noises in their sleep?
November 28, 2025 at 4:22 AM
THE DIPLOMAT on Netflix is a fun diversion during later nights with the newborn, but it is absolutely absurd that the seasons are less than 10 episodes each when the story lines are clearly network-television-season length.

I gasped out loud more than once while reading this story.
Police spent more than 50 days searching a lake for Ryan Borgwardt, a kayaker they assumed had drowned. Then they told his wife that they’d come to believe something different. Jamie Thompson spoke with the people involved in the case that rattled a Wisconsin town:
The Missing Kayaker
What happened to Ryan Borgwardt?

People tell baby poop horror stories all the time, yet I was still unprepared when upon changing a dirty diaper my infant rocketed poop 8 inches across the bassinet, like someone was violently squeezing a bottle of dijon mustard.
