Problem is: Neither our work culture nor our education culture incentivizes deep learning. Instead, we're incentivized to economize--to learn only what's needed to finish the task or get the answer right on the test.

So, people use ChatGPT, even when they know they could learn more by other means.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

Your Cherokee words for today.
The top word is English followed by how it is written in the Cherokee language followed by how it is spelled in English then how to pronounce it phonetically.

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.

Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.

A Trump supporter started murdering his way through an assassination list of Democratic law makers FIVE MONTHS AGO. He murdered my colleague Melissa Hortman, and her husband Mark — and attempted to assassinate my dear friend John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. I was also on the hit list. WTF

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

I just found out that apparently during camping in Pokémon Sword/Shield, it is possible for Pokémon to start fighting, which can be resolved by the player, it's a really cool little thing

(Totally didn't stare at them for a while because I didn't realize I could stop the fight)

Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

And autism was never something to be so terrified of that you avoid vaccines for preventable childhood diseases that could disable or kill you and others

The inherent ableism of this strain of anti-vaccinationism has always been acute
FYI, vaccines do not cause autism.

This is really a startling example of how treating women like shit publicly teaches the men around her to behave so they don’t catch a smack too. Literally domestic violence frame but the workplace
"When an off-camera female reporter... began to ask if there was anything 'incriminating' in the Epstein emails, Trump pointed a finger in her face. 'Quiet. Quiet, Piggy,' he said menacingly."

Tell me again how it's women who are ruining the workplace?

Child marriage is heinous, but one thing I never see brought up in those discussions is that if you are under 18, you cannot file for divorce. If you are under 18 and married to an adult, they are your legal guardian and make decisions for you. That is not a partnership.
Most Minors Who Are Married Can't File for Divorce — Even if They Want To
The final installment of Wedlocked, our series about child marriage in the U.S., explores divorce.

I’m just crying and crying with my whole next week ruined, while a student is just happy to knock a supposed evil bitch down. And I don’t know who the bitch is, but they are apparently very confident with no evidence that it’s me.
I loved teaching & hope to love it again someday, but, today, I just don’t. I just feel incapable & hated for no clear reason. It’s been bad this year. I know it’s not really me, but the fascism & fear, I feel it, too, but being treated as a servant & punching bag by so many students is really hard.

For a second time this year & second time in my entire career in teaching, a student decided to threaten me & contact people to try & get me fired/punished, instead of asking me one simple question. Both spun tales of negligence that didn’t happen, but when called out, they do nothing to apologize.

I just tried to give back part of a delivery refund bc I marked a wrong item as missing, marked the correct missing item, & forgot to unmark the wrong one.

The support agent clearly had never seen anything like it before & didn’t seem fluent in English, so I ended up with twice my refund somehow.
