“It turns out that Charlie Kirk was the glue holding MAGA together,” historian @davidaustinwalsh.bsky.social writes in his review of @lkatfield.bsky.social's book on the MAGA new right. Now, the movement is fracturing between donors, intellectuals, influencers, and an increasingly radical base.

I know all eyes are on Minneapolis, but there's a fast-approaching nightmare in Springfield, Ohio.

Trump is revoking protected status for tens of thousands of Haitians living there on Feb. 3.

Reportedly, on Feb. 4, 1000 ICE agents are arriving to remove this population. Ethnic cleansing.

If you only read the opinion journalism in elite media over the last decade, you would have been convinced that wokeness, and not fascism, were the greatest threats to American society. Now some of those authors are retconning by trying to relabel fascism as "the woke right."

i think this attitude — that all opposition is illegitimate and nothing we do can be questioned— is probably pervasive in the white house and helps explain why they keep making terrible political choices
Putin pioneered this. No opposition is legitimate. Regular, decent, “ordinary” people cannot possibly be against us because only we represent “the real people.”

Tell-tale sign of authoritarianism.

I wish I hadn't watched that video. I never watched the killing of Renee Good and hope I never have to. I don't need to see it to fight it.

Today at least four federal agents were beating a man and then one of them (I think) shot him point blank while he was on the ground. More agents present.

I think it probably is important to know that this was many outnumbered 9:1 being beaten on the ground before he was shot. Not in a car. Not running. ICE will likely come up with some reason why they were afraid for their lives. But you don't need to watch.

This is so lucid and helpful from @thomaszimmer.bsky.social. The situation is awful and could get a lot worse obviously but also: the country is vast, the authoritarianism is unpopular, and nothing will be settled anytime soon. So power on.
