In fact we have records of at least 65,000 immigrants in the late MEDIEVAL period. This means real numbers were significantly higher. In England more than 1% of the population was foreign born (never mind 2nd gen) with numbers as high as 1 in 10 in cities. There’s a database!

Does anyone else get the ‘we’re gonna need a bigger book’ feeling when you get to a certain pivotal
moment in a story? When something so huge has just happened and you want to dive deeep into it?

Should have got this for my work on Rosslyn Chapel.
Just got my official work PPE and now off down the secret passage to my paid government job hiding the evidence for all those ship timbers, swordfights on spiral stairs, and Britain's oldest pub.

THEY don't want you to know but the truth can be found in Youtube comments...

you know who's got some good book titles? The Council for the Care of Churches.
"It won't happen to us: a guide to church insurance"
"Sounds good! a guide to church organs"
"Widening the eye of the needle: a guide to church access"
"how not to do it: installing electricity in your church (1940)"

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

In the UK, you could demolish a church VAT-free, but if you wanted to repair that church, you would have to pay VAT.

Is there a material culture journal for short notes of just cool stuff people have found?
I have so many little ideas about things that I can’t use for anything longer, but would like to share. I’m imagining a sort of magazine with big images and accessible mini-articles. Could call it ‘Neat’?

Remember guys, @pcsunion.bsky.social staff at the BL are on strike for the next two weeks. Please don't cross the picket line to go to reading rooms, attend exhibitions or anything else. They've endured so much on low pay since the cyberattack in 2023 and the least we can do is have their backs now.
