Okay, but are you ‘general feeling of guilt’ lapsed Catholic or ‘will anoint yourself in any handy holy well’ lapsed Catholic?

It’s been a BUSY few weeks getting @churchheritage.bsky.social up and running but right now I’m up in the Cairngorms with the National Lottery Heritage Fund and I got to see a WILDCAT KITTEN at @highlandwpark.bsky.social. It’s so fierce and silly. I’m not a cat person but I do love this little one.

Apparently it’s World Embroidery Day so maybe you’ll enjoy this aerial landscape I made of my beloved childhood haunt - the White Horse of Uffington. An @nationaltrust.org.uk site from the later Bronze Age or Early Iron Age. Find out more here www.oxfordarchaeology.com/uffington-wh...

I loved St Cuthbert’s Chapel on Inner Farne, begun 1369. Furnishings nicked from Durham Cathedral, dream-soaked light, and a beaded curtain to keep out the violent arctic terns (exterior photo taken quickly because I was at risk of getting my ears severely pecked).

Just this evening finally submitted an absolute unit of a chapter about the art and architecture of wonderful Trinity college, Edinburgh. Brewing since my PhD (graduated in 2017), it’s been a long gestation!

Of COURSE our National Lottery Heritage Fund Scotland committee meetings take place in a building with a loo that’s a 16th century bread oven.

I’ve devoted the past 12+ years to understanding Scotland in the Middle Ages but I’ve never watched Braveheart. Tonight, it’s finally happening.

First day of mystery new job tomorrow (a mystery until the project launch later this week, that is). Wish me luck please!

On holiday and appreciating the use of ‘pillaged’ in this wall text from a local exhibition on Homeric Ithaca.

Sure, the Elgin marbles get the attention, but I’d love to see the British Museum give back the 33 items they nicked to this small and lovely community. I wonder if they’re even on show?

Back in my favourite place (Kioni, Ithaca) - with bonus sheep on the beach!

Now my contract with Edinburgh is officially over (got my P45 in the post today) I’d particularly love it if you’d like to invite me to speak for your research seminar series, event, etc.

I love giving talks and I’d like to keep those fires lit in the next part of my career.

E.g. the sound of Iona looking towards Mull and Ardnamurchan or skerries at the Bay at the Back of the Ocean. Probs not suitable but I’ll let you judge that.

In my spare time I manage a wee Derek Jarman inspired garden on the coast in Dunbar and it’s looking especially beautiful right now.

Such a pleasure to spend last weekend with the @profaliceroberts.bsky.social talking about all things Rosslyn, Temple, pseudo-history, and grail lore.

So, that’s it, I’ve packed up my office and had my last proper working day as a @leverhulme.ac.uk Early Career Fellow at Edinburgh. It’s been a wild ride!

I’m not going far though… details to follow.
