Historian, professor, friend of sweet pitbulls and cats. Wrote a book about the Rhinelander trial (1925) a while back for UNC Press. Recent work on Urban League and equality 1960s/early 70s. I sew, knit, and read historical mysteries.
Great news about this resource from the amazing Library of Congress! Great to use in the undergraduate history classroom. During the pandemic my intro history students searched Chronicling America to see what local newspapers said-or not-about the 1918 pandemic. They enjoyed finding the old stories.

Teaching first half US History intro survey this semester and covering 1850 Fugitive Slave Act and efforts like this to rescue people who freed themselves. Asking students to imagine being alive then and considering what can you/could you/should you do? Tubman knew the answer.
Harriet Tubman, with a group of people, "stormed building where Charles Nalle was being held for 2nd time &, through gunfire, liberated him."

#tdih 1860 in Troy, NY, Tubman helped rescue Nalle, held under horrific Fugitive Slave Law.

Dang, too true. So many boxes of tissues. . .
Meanwhile a survey of more than 500 historians finds the vast majority curled up into a ball and weeping softly.

Glad I had my history class read the Declaration closely last month especially grievances against the king. Still too relevant 1 month later!
NO KING, NO MONARCH!

Teaching first half US History survey this semester. We’re up to the Revolution. Class did close reading of the Declaration of Independence last week. Inspired new bumper sticker. Current events too relevant 😳

It’s for pieces like this from Will Bunch that I subscribe to the Inquirer although Phillie is at least a 5 hour drive away. He reminds us of the moral issues at stake right now. You won’t find anything like it in the other “national” newspapers which I no longer subscribe to.
There's a reason ICE agents wear masks in the street. From Kristi Noem's war-crime propaganda to the airport officers harassing innocent tourists, the MAGA deportation regime is not just immoral but increasingly criminal

Someday, there must be justice. My new column www.inquirer.com/opinion/comm...
When this is over, U.S. rights abusers must be tried for crimes against humanity
Escalating reports of human rights crimes from Kristi Noem's propaganda to ICE cruelty must be wiped clean with justice.

Should be a national holiday! I celebrate the Confederacy’s defeat in the Civil War and remind anyone who wants to put those statues back up ( you know the ones I mean) that they are monuments to losers and traitors.
Happy Confederate Surrender Day!

At the battle of Gettysburg, Minnesota soldiers captured Virginia’s battle flag and Minnesota still has it. Virginia keeps asking for it back and each governor tells them to get stuffed.

Minnesota has a Confederate symbol — and it is going to keep it
Minnesota has a Confederate symbol in its possession. It has long caused controversy. And Minnesota is not moving it.

Today’s double sided poster for Hands Off protests. Attended 2 today! One in our county seat and the other in my small Ohio city. Good turnout for both! People are angry about the cuts to the federal government, DOGE, and the Trump tariffs.

Two sided sign for today’s Tesla Takedown in the Cleveland area in Ohio. Looked like a good turnout. Very positive responses from passing traffic! #TeslaTakedown

As a history professor at an Ohio public uni all I can say is that this is awful. Not surprised Rep legislature and governor just union busted faculty unions plus going to make it more difficult to teach history accurately. As the immortal Ohioan Christie Hynde once sang, “hey, ho, way to go Ohio!”
Mike DeWine just ended academic freedom at Ohio public colleges and universities. He just signed the most restrictive higher ed bill in modern American history.
BREAKING: Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Friday signed into law a massive higher education overhaul to ban diversity efforts, regulate classroom discussion, and prohibit faculty strikes, among other things. The law will take effect in 90 days.

The governor of Ohio signed this bill into law today. This is going to make Ohio’ s public higher ed whiter than it already is.

This 2016 conference was fantastic! I had the distinct pleasure of attending. Great material in here for teaching African American History.

If you’re an Ohioan please reach out to Gov. DeWine and ask him to veto SB1 when it reaches his desk. It’s an absurd bill that will decrease the quality/value of public higher ed in Ohio and it also hurts faculty unions. Why is Ohio on a race to the bottom?

This bill is going to make it extremely difficult to teach American history accurately in Ohio’s public universities. The elimination of DEI is only going to make Ohio’s public higher ed even whiter than it already is.
Commentary: The Ohio Republican higher ed bill substitutes governmental edicts for academic freedom; eliminates diversity and inclusion; restricts how faculty teach; and bans faculty strikes. It guts academic freedom and reshapes public universities.
