Historian, professor, friend of sweet pitbulls and cats. Wrote a book about the Rhinelander trial (1925) a while back for UNC Press. Recent work on Urban League and equality 1960s/early 70s. I sew, knit, and read historical mysteries.
But Senator Husted promised in his July 3 email that the bill would help working Ohioans and their families and it was “prioritizing working Americans.” Somehow I’m not surprised he was bs’ing. He can delete his social media post but my inbox lives on. Can’t wait to vote against him in 2026

Today’s double sided poster for Hands Off protests. Attended 2 today! One in our county seat and the other in my small Ohio city. Good turnout for both! People are angry about the cuts to the federal government, DOGE, and the Trump tariffs.

Two sided sign for today’s Tesla Takedown in the Cleveland area in Ohio. Looked like a good turnout. Very positive responses from passing traffic! #TeslaTakedown

Not an organizer but a historian. There’s a significant date coming up—April 19-perfect for a pro-democracy rally. The 250th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord between MA militiamen and British soldiers on April 19, 1775. www.nps.gov/mima/learn/h...

In OH SB 1 a similar course is part of an unholy mix of anti-diversity and anti-union measures. It calls for an American civic literacy class plus the study of "the American economic system and capitalism" Students must pass a cumulative final exam and the class is required to graduate. In the midst of everything going on right now and that will only continue, I’m grateful to share my house and more importantly my couch with Hannah, the rescue pit bull mix. She is the sweetest thing and is convinced she is a lap dog at 60 lbs. Here she is luckily not on my lap!

@bextraordinary.bsky.social Here’s my post of things I do outside my daily academic job. I sew my own clothes because I hate shopping. I also sew to stay sane. Here’s my new fall canvas chore jacket. It’s a bit wrinkled because I wore it today to work. Perfect for a chilly fall morning!

Comfort food for Friday before Election Day! Baked squash stuffed with sweet potatoes, kale, leeks, and Gruyère. Spouse is the cook @pixlaw.bsky.social
Take good care of yourself and others if you can. The next few days/weeks are going to be hard.

I don’t usually self promote. But what the heck! Great book about race and the power of racism all in the context of a spectacular legal trial that took place in NY almost 100 years ago in 1925!. Published by the fabulous UNC Press in 2009. @uncpress.bsky.social

Here‘s another one from Judge magazine from @1903 depicting immigrants as rats. Just used yesterday in US History college survey class to discuss late 19th century anti-immigrant sentiment.

A white mob over 1000 strong burned down Black businesses and rooming houses.
New York Times, March 9, 1904.
Two years later, after an altercation in a Springfield bar, a white mob again attacked Springfield’s Black community this time going after Black homes.

The late summer garden. Lots of garlic chives—so pretty—and the pollinators that love them. 🌱

Strange thing in the morning summer garden. Somewhat visually disturbing yet intriguing.

I was a young adult in the 80s with the haircut to prove it! Seeing some of Kamala Harris’ photos from the same era makes me wonder if we had the same hair stylist. Too funny!

One part of my profile is my identification as someone who sews. I learned to sew my own clothes because I hate shopping for clothing. Here’s my recent project, the Adams Pant (yes, pant not pants) by Daughter Judy patterns. These are super comfortable twill pants. I love them and my bee button!
