Someone called the police on my 9 year old when she was at the park in our neighborhood by herself. The officer told me she’s not allowed to go until she’s 11… I called the non-emergency number and that officer told me there is no such rule. 🙄

The other day I told a younger Gen-Z that I liked Jennifer Jason Leigh, and when they asked me who she was and to rec a film, I was tempted to say Single White Female. Just, you know, for yuks. (I ended up saying Annihilation.)

“If there was ever a case that would justify a verdict like that, it’s this case. You have a 16-year-old kid who is running away from danger, doesn’t know he’s running towards the police, but he’s running toward the police, and there’s a police officer that shoots him in the back. ..all on video.”
Breaking News: San Diego agreed to pay $30 million to the family of Konoa Wilson, a 16-year-old who was shot and killed by the police, in one of the largest settlements of its kind in U.S. history.
San Diego to Pay $30 Million to Family of Konoa Wilson, Teen Killed by Police
Konoa Wilson was 16 when he was fatally shot. The settlement, one of the largest in a police killing, surpasses the $27 million paid to the family of George Floyd.

Or, well, I guess "securities-backed" goes a bit further down the ladder than I thought, but the act does have both wealth and income thresholds common to the buy-borrow-die strategy before the tax triggers. $100 million net worth and an otherwise lower effective tax rate on true income

This particular loophole for the wealthy — taking out loans on their wealth, which they live on, then directing returns toward loan payments so they're never taxed — is an old one that I'm pretty sure involves some very specific vehicles. Closing it presumably targets the vehicle or the collateral 🤞

It is both funny and deeply sad to read about HORSES now that it has actually released.
I hope Santa Ragione has enough left to try publishing on consoles. There's nothing in the game that would keep it off the Switch. You know, the console for children.

How about we shut down the government for this very popular and specific goal and then, hear me out, we hold out for like a month and a half and then, ok this part is important, after a watershed election where we ran the table, ONLY THEN, fold and don't get the one thing we said we wanted.

So excited to read extraction!! Been following the authors of A Planet To Win since a fun reading group that went over it and think it remains some of the best writing about why a green new deal, or broadly just climate policy that works for people and workers, is the way out of our current crises.
Thrilled to see this review of EXTRACTION by @scottwstern.bsky.social in @theatlantic.com. A very thorough essay that situates the book in broader debates about mining, the energy transition, the history of global capitalism, and the possible green futures ahead www.theatlantic.com/books/2025/1...

Remember when the malls were saying kids couldn't come there without an adult unless they worked there...? Remember that one city that gave all its kids a curfew...? Remember the kids police killed for playing unsupervised...? Or the parents charged with crimes for leaving their kids in parks...?
"Most of the children in our survey said that they aren’t allowed to be out in public at all without an adult. Fewer than half of the 8- and 9-year-olds have gone down a grocery-store aisle alone; more than a quarter aren’t allowed to play unsupervised even in their own front yard."
