#disability #accessibility #design #architecture

It can be difficult for physically able bodied people to fully understand accessibility issues. Yes, I am a #chronicIllness person, but physically I'm fine - until I have surgery.

Yesterday I had my first ever experience driving a wheelchair.

2 sleeps to go until I say goodbye cast and hello moon boot.

Girlfriend had a hip replaced today, so will visit her once I'm in the moon boot - the same hospital I went to, so just across the road from my surgeon's rooms.

And I'll get an x-ray!! See if it is exactly the same as the left one!

I’ve always slept better with a cool, even cold bedroom. My bedroom window is open all winter. I might need a doona and a wheat bag at my feet, but the room has to be cold. The alternative is having a fan on.

This is intetesting because when I did the Chronic Pain Management Program in 2017, we were instructed the best temps for sleeping were <= 15⁰ C.

New research finds keeping room temperature at 24 degrees or below could reduce sleep stress for older Australians
Study finds link between room temperature and sleep stress for elderly
The study by Griffith University in Brisbane finds that a room temperature while sleeping of more than 24 degrees Celsius increases heart rate variability and physiological stress.

I don't often publicly recommend allied health providers: making an exception!

If you live in or near Melbourne and could use the services of an exercise physiologist I highly recommend Health in Balance.

If you are not sure what EPs are/do, ask me, happy to answer!

Thomas is actually doing a home visit to help me during this post-op period. 😊 I'm very grateful.

Yes, EPs can be covered by My Aged Care Plans, or CHMPs from the GP, or PHI or NDIS.

I am by nature a barefoot person.

I knocked my little toe on a wheel of the knee scooter and now have a rather dirty looking bruise.

This is a toe I have a screw in (where don't I have screws?🤷🏻‍♀️) so I hope I haven't damaged anything. *sigh*.

I broke the nail (scooter again) a couple of days ago.

Just done the shower process again, which is smiliar but different.

Once I was FINALLY dressed, I reckoned I burn more calories doing these things, over a day, that I do during a gym workout!

The effort is very tiring.

I feel very much for those for whom such situations are permanent. 🫂

I posted this yesterday and then deleted it when my tone was perceived to be sarcastic. I was trying to illustrate to healthy family, friends & colleagues of #ChronicIllness and #disability people what we face, sometimes temporarily, in other cases permanently. I deleted the thread yesterday
