Very cool research and even better to see Charles Stewart from @mitelectionlab.bsky.social sing from happiness.
Kidding, no singing, but yes to excitement for science.
Day 2 of Protecting the Election: AI & Governance began today at @washupolisci.bsky.social w/ Research Presentations: Deepfakes & Misinformation. Charles Stewart intro-ed presentations from Christopher Lucas (WashU), Kylan Rutherford (NYU) & Mike Tomz (Stanford) w/Q&A by @liamerivaki.bsky.social

I am originally from Greece too. And my father was at the Polytexneio during the student uprising. Just my two cents:

1) fascism is not a discrete state. The range is continuous, fuzzy, and contextual. Tom seems to think there is a cutoff, after which "we are there." Where is that exactly?

1/
Many of you ask me when we're "there." Well, I've said we're heading for authoritarianism. But we're not yet at Greek or Soviet or current Chinese levels. And to be fascist, we'd have to get to North Korean, or maybe Putinist levels of repression.
We're *not even close* to that.

Interesting to observe the debate about vaccines and Tylenol. I wonder if these "skeptics" are the same ones that give their kids Benadryl on the plane to get their kids to sleep so that they can enjoy the flight without their kids bothering them.

Seems relevant..
"In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential freedoms.
The first is the freedom of speech and expression - everywhere in the world.
The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way - everywhere in the world."

The point about respecting one's dignity is valid.
But how intellectually consistent are we when we welcome speakers whose arguments essentially undermine the dignity of others?
And we call that a difficult conversation?

So, first it's mental health issues ---> gun violence

Which means treatment will solve this problem (but we won't fund support and resources)

Now we are told treatments ---> gun violence?

This elephant is hiding in the room so well looks like.

So proud that we contributed to data rescue efforts for Dpt of Education data at @massivedatagu.bsky.social. Our Save the Data Crew consists of students, faculty, staff, and members of the public who want to support information availability and integrity.
Today is the first day of school or the first week of the semester for so many. Remember, DRP and our partners have saved some of the Dept of Education data. Find these datasets in our Portal. If you spot something missing, reach out!

I am working on a voter accessibility project and every single disability rights org I am taking with expressed concern about voters with disabilities being thrown under the bus.
For disabled Americans, mail-in voting isn’t a convenience—it’s a vital right to vote safely and independently.

As I told @juliametraux.bsky.social: “Eliminating this option would not only be unconstitutional, it would add to the barriers disabled voters already face.”

Trump's promise to end vote-by-mail is yet another attack on disabled voters
The president credits democracy superfan Vladimir Putin with the idea. Yes, really.

States should all adopt voting rights act legislation.
Arizonans have safely and securely voted by mail for decades, ever since the Republican-led legislature approved it in the 1990’s. Donald Trump wants to rip away that right based on lies and conspiracies. But he has zero authority to interfere in Arizona’s elections.

Trump says he will lead 'movement' to end mail-in voting
President Trump said on Monday that that he will lead a movement to get rid of mail-in ballots, claiming, without providing evidence, that it leads to voter fraud.

Waiting to see how many daycare centers and schools will bring back masks|parents will send their kids to school with a mask given no access to flu and covid vaccines.

This breaks my heart. I would not be where I am now if I had not come to the US for grad school. "Funny" thing is that int'l students pay A LOT to come.
If visa extensions and OPT are not available, it seems impossible to attract students now.
Not to mention going on the market from abroad.
The White House is taking new steps to undermine every international student at our universities.

It has approved a new rule restricting student visas to 4 years max. That's not long enough for PhD students, or about half of undergrads, to finish their degree.

Likely to enter force within days.

You know, it's not really a stretch. As a society we have agreed that airborne diseases are not a thing (masking to mitigate airborne transmission). So why ban smoking.
Full disclosure I am a non smoker and was raised in a smoking household.
The 1st tea party website was about stopping smoking bans in public places. The idea was my right to do what I want beats your right to not be harmed.
Mike Pence even wrote an op ed saying smoking was not as dangerous as “back handed big government disguised in do-gooder health care rhetoric”
