Not sure what sort of spell these moose are casting on our snow stake...but I have a bad feeling about it 🪄

Is this deer still considered an unmarked individual if it has such a distinctive (and stylish) coiffure?

This new paper led by the excellent Erin Tattersall is well worth a read

It's the last day at #TWS2025 but we've got a pretty good finale lined up.

✔️more efficient grizzly bear monitoring
✔️what's influencing moose population size and trends
✔️where are the moose and where are they going?

Sad to hear about the passing of Dr Markland - he was such a strong, compassionate, and honest voice from the front lines of healthcare in our province.

Thoughts are with his family and loved ones.

Whelp

This is the final edition of our local newspaper in Hinton. Sad to see it shutting down. Losing more local journalism from local sources, which is needed more than ever in rural Alberta right now.

Sadly I live in Alberta where Health Canada is ignored.

Even HC workers and elderly might not have access to this. And if they do they'll have to pay 🫥
Health Canada has authorized the LP.8.1 variant adapted Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for individuals aged 6 months and older.

The updated COMIRNATY® vaccine targets the Omicron LP.8.1 variant, one of the most recently circulating SARS-CoV-2 lineages. It will be made available this Fall across Canada.

"Unlike comments made by non-scientists such as Premier Danielle Smith that the vaccine “doesn’t work very well,” an intervention that reduces deaths, ICU visits and development of long COVID is real and impactful."
Excellent Editorial please read👇
Opinion: Alberta's COVID vaccine limits go against ethical health-care delivery
All Albertans should have the choice of all available options including the COVID-19 vaccine.

Late last fall, we sent over 1000 hair samples – a year of hard work by the grizzly bear team – to the lab. But we were holding our breath for one sample in particular: a bear of the size and colour typical of grizzly bears and head features that looked more like a black bear's.

As a caribou biologist living and working in Hinton, 50% of these are high on my priority list

We have had no Dr in our our ER overnight nearly every night in 2025

And sometimes no Dr after 1pm

Luckily for him our MLA doesn't live in Hinton, so it's not on his high priority list
Hey Rural Albertans... 3 outta 4 of these endangered items might not be too high on your priority list...

But the one you care most about might be the first one to go extinct...

There is NO PLAN... govt will spout "record doctor numbers"... you seeing them in rural?

It's time for another guess the bear; this one even tricked some of our biologists!

Before we sent its hair off to the lab for DNA sequencing, we made our guesses. Before we reveal the answer, see if you can figure it out. We'll post the answer in a week!

Some US members of congress wrote the Canadian ambassador on July 7, 2025 with respect to fire management and the resulting smoke from Canadian forest fires. The reality is that the increase in fires & smoke is largely due to human-caused climate change, and we will see more fire in the future.

Also, many immigrants become citizens. Like me.

Who can then vote for a provincial govt party that isn't xenophobic
Who, exactly, are these immigrants that have made Danielle so angry? Filipino nurses who provide our healthcare? American computer scientists who make Edmonton an AI centre of excellence? Ukrainian refugees who've opened new restaurants? West Africans who have revitalized our francophone community?

It's probably $110 USD as well 🫠
The cost of the COVID vaccine to AB is projected at $110/shot.

Cost to general public remains TBD, but the government says patients will "pay the full cost" and that "much" of the $49M cost for the entire COVID program will be recouped through those payments.

Apparently in Alberta we now follow the recommendations of the FDA and CDC

Not Health Canada and NACI

Did I miss a referendum?

HEPA filters and masks are now standard equipment for our field crews (for trailers, camp, and fieldwork). Used every year

5 years ago this was not the case.

For those saying 'its the way it's always been, nothing has changed'...This is not true.
