#BOTD in 1882, A. A. Milne is remembered today primarily for the Winnie-the-Pooh books and characters.

However, he also had an extensive career as a playwright, including 1919’s Mr. Pim Passes By. Leslie Howard appeared in this comedy early in his stage career.

‘Pimpernel Smith’ (1941). One of my favourite films. Played mostly as comic adventure, until near the end, when Smith looks Nazism square in the eye and coldly foretells its end. Howard, with a tilt of the head and suitable lighting, instantly transforms from absent-minded professor to Grim Reaper.

Indiana Jones is my second favorite archeologist hero. My number one favorite archeologist hero is proffesor Horatio Smith played by Leslie Howard in "Pimpernel Smith." If you have never seen "Pimpernel Smith" you need to watch it today. It is in the public domain.

Fun, escapist comedy discovery tonight thanks to Warner Archive. De Havilland plays someone similar to Katharine Hepburn’s crazy Bringing Up Baby character. Maybe not quite as crazy. My favorite part of the film was Leslie Howard, showing his delightful comic side.

Vanity Fair, January 1934:

“Mr. Howard first came over here fourteen years ago—a reticent, blond young man who had been acting for some time on the British stage. American audiences promptly lionized him and since then he has been a local hero on both stage and screen . . .”

Born #OTD in 1887, comic actor Eric Blore is a familiar face to fans of screwball comedies. With his distinctive delivery, he was the perfect foil for Leslie Howard as harried valet Digges to Howard’s high-maintenance stage actor Basil Underwood in It’s Love I’m After (1937).
