FRANKENSTEIN (1910)
The very first screen adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, directed by J. Searle Dawley for the Edison Company, remains hypnotic and surprisingly effective even more than a century later. 🎥

LOOK BACK IN ANGER (1959)
A film based on John Osborne's "kitchen sink" play, a part of the new realism movement in Britain in the 50s. Tony Richardrson, who directed by play, directed the movie. With Richard Burton and Claire Bloom. Highly recommended. 🎥

A Hungarian-born film actor who appeared in over two hundred movies and television programs. In Paris, his act in the Folies Bergère included impersonations of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. After being beaten up, he moved to Hollywood. One of the best!

LON CHANEY: A THOUSAND FACES (2000)
In this meticulously researched tribute, Kevin Brownlow (whose devotion to silent-era cinema is nothing less than legendary) pulls together a portrait of Lon Chaney that both celebrates his transformative artistry and gently excavates his lesser-told story. 🎥

THE MUMMY (1932)
The original, haunting tale of reincarnation and a love that lives through the ages. Directed by the great cinematographer Karl Freund. Highly recommended. 🎥

A wild artifact from the swingin’ sixties, THE SPY IN THE CREEN HAT is a cobbled-together feature film stitched from a two-part episode of the old MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. TV series and it’s all the more fun for it. The movie is a delirious mix of Cold War intrigue, and high-camp performances.🎥

The great actress was one of my favorites and it breaks my heart that she's gone. I first saw her in UPSTAIRS/DOWNSTAIRS; loved her in WODEHOUSE PLAYHOUSE and NO, HONESTLY. I got to see her onstage in Willy Russell's one woman play SHIRLEY VALENTINE.

THE MASTERMIND (2025)
Kelly Reichardt’s film feels like it has slipped through time. A film made in 2025 but with the mood, pacing, and moral ambiguity of the 1970s. 🎥
