The Chief of Streets position is a high-profile job where it’s about impossible to please everyone. Thanks to @jfh01.bsky.social & team for helping to move the needle forward on street safety!

I guess we’re fortunate that it’s cold enough here in New England that we don’t have falling iguana alerts in our weather forecasts
FALLING IGUANA ALERT ⚠️ Temperatures aren't the only thing expected to plummet in Florida during next week's cold snap. These large reptiles become projectiles when they get too chilly. https://www.wfla.com/news/florida/will-iguanas-fall-from-trees-in-florida-during-next-weeks-cold-snap/

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse on Nov 7, 1940 stands as one of the most dramatic and instructive engineering failures.

At the time it had the longest center span of any suspension bridge.

This disaster improved the understanding of aerodynamic forces in civil engineering.

“Galloping Gertie” fell into Puget Sound on November 7, 1940, when 42 mph winds caused the suspension bridge to twist violently and collapse.

Today, in 1940, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collapsed

The bridge's main span, known as Galloping Gertie, collapsed in 40-mile-per-hour (64 km/h) winds on the morning of November 7, 1940. Only opened on July 1, the bridge was only 4 months old. The only casualty was Tubby, a dog trapped in a car. 😢

This is one of the biggest issues w/ US and bikes. Still seen as purely recreational/fitness equipment by a lot of folks, impractical for transportation because of how we built the country.

Needs huge cultural change.
This interview correctly focuses on too many cars being the cause of congestion, and there is plenty of discussion about expanding and improving public transit. Yet nowhere in these 7 minutes are bikes ever discussed as a transit option.
Is Boston traffic getting worse?

My cat says okay it’s eight o’clock, where’s my dinner? And here I am trying to explain that we changed the clocks so it’s not time to eat yet.

The cat says this is stupid.

It is far too easy to be connected to just about any horrible person.
