Setting new Christmas warm records has "been a thing" in recent years, so Thursday's forecast continues that trend.

Here are the daily warm records (both highs and warm lows) set/tied in the US this century, per NOAA/NCEI.

And, as you might guess, far outnumbers Christmas cold records.

Over the past 48 hours as of this post, 331 reports of wind damage (58 of which were from severe t-storms) have been received by the NWS from the Northwest to the Tennessee Valley and Appalachians.

We'll only add to that tally today in what has been the "week of wind".

Christmas travel getaway Friday will be a headache for the East Coast hubs, given the wind and rain moving in.

These are either expected or possible delays today, per the FAA.

Over the past 36 hours, there have been 23 separate wind gusts of 100+ mph measured in the West.

And 163 reports of wind damage. That included 1 death (tree fall onto a home) in Idaho and 2 injured kids from downed trees and powerlines while waiting at a bus stop in Twin Falls, ID.

Warmest first half of December on record in Pacific NW, including Seattle and Portland.

Among top 10 coldest in the Midwest and parts of the East, including Cleveland, Pittsburgh.

Now over 534k w/o power in WA and OR, per poweroutage.us.

That number has risen over 200k in just 1-2 hours.

Safe to say "wind" is the dominant US weather word the next 3 days.

First time on record they've done that any time between Dec. 16 and Jan. 30.

Jan. 31, 2024, they hit 53˚, an all-time Jan. record.

NCAR is crucial to cutting-edge meteorology and improvements in weather forecasting. As others have noted, it's far, far bigger than a "climate" research lab. This is self-sabotage by a wildly ignorant and malicious administration cutting off their nose to spite their face. Find a better scapegoat.

It's like on the eve of WWII we decided to stop funding R&D into weapons systems to develop advanced aircraft, ships, and tanks. Climate change is going to kick our butts if we lose NCAR (and NOAA) at a time when climate change is increasing extreme weather events capable of crashing the economy.

And some daily record highs also possible Friday in the recently chilly Northeast.

Meanwhile, the West records keep piling up into at least early next week.

Weird warmth Wednesday:
- Yakima, WA tied its Dec. record (72˚) despite almost full cloud cover. Just 1˚ shy of high in Vegas.

- Portland, OR "low" was 11˚ warmer than their average high.
