Secondary low! Or a mesoscale low located over the North Bay is pulling in some heavy rain showers for SF right now.

I've been trying to write this story for months. I've had a sneaking suspicion that the public perception of what El Nino and La Nina means for weather outcomes is not aligned with the truth.

California’s rule book on El Niño and La Niña is broken
La Niña is back, but week-to-week jet-stream chaos really decide whether California floods or stays dry.

Some pop up storms on the Peninsula today!
Was just hit by a terrain-induced convective shower in San Francisco’s Twin Peaks neighborhood, the first I’ve experienced in my time living here. The marine layer typically limits surface convection along the San Francisco Peninsula, but it’s nonexistent today, making these showers possible. #CAwx

Can you spot the atmospheric river? The intensity of the low pressure system off the PNW has oriented the AR in a north/south direction over California. Keeps the party going for awhile in SF and Sacramento!

Atmospheric river to hit California with heavy rain, strong winds. Here’s a timeline of the storm
A fast-moving storm driven by an atmospheric river will sweep down the California coast, bringing a quick burst of heavy rain, strong winds and snow in the Sierra Nevada.

The Bay Area will have a few hours of clear(ish) skies! This is the modeled cloud cover at 9pm. White is overcast, blut is clear. Clouds will fill in everywhere overnight, so give it a shot now!

Time to open the resorts in Tahoe? This weeks storm is trending colder. Looks like a good 10 to 15 inches for most resorts and 3 to 6 inches at lake level by Friday.

Excellent story from Andrea, but my mind naturally wanders to an unanswered question. @bmcnoldy.bsky.social's OHC charts show October 2023 to 2025 with historically high levels. Why?
Thanks to @bmcnoldy.bsky.social & @drkimwood.bsky.social for help with this story. We were all struggling to find sufficient words.

The Category 5 storm is expected to cause “total structural failure” in parts of the island and unleash up to 40 inches of rain.

Also, Hurricane Melissa is quite a thing to look at. Beautiful and terrifying. One recent measurement recorded sustained winds of 180 mph around the eye. This will be a historic storm for Jamaica and not in a good way.

Wow, some impressive rainfall totals around the Bay Area. Much of this fell in just a few hours. 1.69 inches in San Jose would make it a top 10 wettest day in the last two decades. And how about that 2.19 inch reading in Oakland!

Rain is approaching San Francisco and will begin within the next 30 min. Downpours across the Bay Area could cause nuisance flooding, especially during the evening commute. Thunder and lightning is possible as the atmosphere becomes increasingly unstable this afternoon. #CAwx
