I recently saw a list of the first members of the Croatian Mountaineering Association:a group of prominent men (scientists, politicians, artists) who used the outdoors as a space to develop their relationships and networks.

I’ve been reading about Rosalind Franklin and came across a fascinating piece on her visits to Slovenia and Yugoslavia. Impressive historiography from a chemist — precise and well-grounded. It’s in Slovenian, but DeepL handles it quite OK, native speaker here. acsi-journal.eu/index.php/AC...

A thread on this experiment, connected to my seminar on sitting. I started with a brief introduction about why I believe reading is important and shared an example of the reading load I experienced as a student, esp in Belgrade, where it was common for entire books to be assigned for exams.
A bit anxious to start the semester next week! I'm trying something new - a heavy emphasis on reading and both my classes will conclude with a Klausur. There is more to read than usual + pockets of time for reading during class, along with several reading-centered assignments.

Another few WWII bombs found in Berlin. Once again heard some gleeful you-reap-what-you sow comments. Recently, a bomb was suspected in our communal courtyard, in an area where 60+% have Migrationshintergrund, children who play there almost exclusively with MH, including refugees. Who would reap?

Hate how omnipresent AI is (or in Croatian: iskače iz paštete/jumps out of a tin of paté). Grading Hausarbeiten and Adobe pops up with:

Potaknut ovim threadom - otvoren poziv blueskajašima koji žive u Zagrebu a nikad se ne voze vlakom da odemo na demonstracijski izlet - ovog ljeta sam prošao 75% željezničke mreže u HR i ozbiljno tvrdim da željeznica unatoč svemu u ovoj zemlji ima budućnost i moguće je voziti se vlakom brzo i sigurno

Going to Japan tomorrow, like seemingly every middle-class person in Germany I know in 2025, and every upper-class person in Croatia. I don’t have a Japan obsession yet (though fascinated how so many different ppl have one), but looking forward to food&my dear friend who moved there.

Send us your pitches (50–100 words) by October 1 and join us for our first-ever Virtual Open House on September 24:

I got some lovely messages re: my essay on parental loneliness. I especially appreciated how non-parents connected with it: immigrants, people unsure of their place in the queer community, (un)wantedly childless people. Our capacity for compassion and connection is stronger than assumed&I love that.
