JUST IN: The Trump administration removed the 2024 Surgeon General advisory declaring gun violence a public health crisis from the HHS website.

This was historic action that #ThisIsOurLane founder @josephsakran.bsky.social & public health leaders spent years advocating for. This is a step backward.

Indiana isn't as big as Texas or Florida, but for those of us in higher education, it's worth paying attention to what is (and has been) going on. Take the Governor's new budget, which cut all of the $10M previously allocated to Martin University, the only predominantly Black school in the state.

Happy New Year.

May 2025 bring us all: a large amount of love, enough hard work to make us proud, full-throated joy, the ability to grow.

And most of all, may it bring us the stamina to pause, or perchance to retreat for a bit, but never, ever to give up.

Gun violence is the NUMBER ONE cause of death for children and teens in the US.

Not car crashes. Not cancer. It's guns.

Schools should be sites of learning for our kids, not centers of carnage.

If you care about gun violence and how to reduce it, read these stories of impacted people. Because of my background as a public defender, my bias is to start from the personal and pull back to broader questions rather than starting from impersonal community level data. Either way, do more.
The daily news cycle’s recounting of stories about gun violence is often minimal and dispassionate. In a new essay collection, survivors in Chicago go from the subjects of crime coverage to the writers, and they tell the story of gun violence in the city in a different manner.
They Lost Loved Ones to Guns. They’re Sharing Their Stories So Things Will Be Different.
