In Chicago/Chicagoland or anywhere else in Illinois:

-Call Gov Pritzker; tell him you agree w ⬇️: 217-782-0244
-Find & call your state electeds & US Rep & Senators - tell them this unconstitutional power grab is wholly unacceptable: www.elections.il.gov/electionoper...
-Ask others to do the same

Pritzker: "I refuse to pretend that any of this is normal ... I refuse to fall into the pundit trap that demands we sacrifice vital constitutional rights if it's being done in the fake guise of fighting crime."

So messed up! The state Dept is implementing new vetting standards of foreign students' social media to look for "terrorist and antisemitic" sympathies. A front to slow student enrollments, chill free speech, and dissuade students from studying in the US 😡

The Trump administration is unlawfully seeking to destroy higher education in the United States. It now demands that we sacrifice our international students in the process. Universities cannot acquiesce to such extortion.

Review of dear @ambliopia.bsky.social’s not to be missed The Company — finally published in English! @cetracey.bsky.social does a great job threading Verónica Gerber Bicecci’s previous work, so if you’re new to her fabulous books, this is a good starting point.

Although I’m mostly off social media at this point, I did want to mark my last day teaching at UChicago. It’s been a truly rich experience getting to work with such wonderful students. Happily, I’ll be continuing my career as Assistant Professor of Spanish at Wartburg College this fall!

The latest installment of my column for Atlas Obscura, "Eerie Feeling," on places and spaces that generate that sense of the eerie, is live. It's about lake monsters! Who doesn't love a lake monster?

Hey all, I've started a new column at Atlas Obscura!

It's called "Eerie Feeling," and it takes Mark Fisher's definition of the "eerie" as a jumping off point to delve into some of the weirder aspects of history.

You can read the first installment, on the Mad Gasser of Mattoon, Illinois, here:
Airing Out the Mystery of the Mad Gasser of Mattoon
What a strange spate of "gas attacks" tells us about what was really lurking in mid-century America.
