my fundamental belief about art is that you can basically just do whatever and you'll probably be fine
Super Mario World has an extremely eclectic art style whereby many enemies are drawn in completely different ways. Development files reveal Mario went through many stylistic changes; it is possible that all the enemies were made to fit Mario, but at different points in time.

A lot to chew on in this post (and since I'm teaching a special topics unit on JRPGs as a genre right now, DQ1 is on my mind) and coming to a couple places:
-- We use "more plot" as a bribe, in modern RPGs (not just JRPGs) all the time. We deal with gameplay tedium to Receive More Story.

the problem with modern videogame rpgs is they don't have quests like the one in phantasy star, where you need to bribe a governor with cake, but the only cake shop in the entire solar system is on a different planet, at the bottom of a four-floor dungeon, behind a locked door.
