Turns out smashing your own people with super aggressive policing, anti-protest laws and appalling political attacks is not sustainable for Chris Minns. Thousands opposing a genocide on Sydney’s streets were on the right side of history and this back down by Minns proves it.

With current frenzy about Australian Values, worth looking at how these are currently implemented and how the new ideas might work (or not work). Also worth asking if some of these ideas are themselves reflective of Australian Values.

At the end of this week, Anthony Albanese will become Australia's longest serving prime minister since John Howard. He's on track to rival Fraser and Hawke in time in the top job. But to leave what legacy?
“If Orwell wrote 1984 by following the threads of what politicians were sewing in 1948, then the ‘social cohesion’ our leaders are threading now are only forming a tighter net to trap us all,” writes @amyremeikis.bsky.social.

You would think politicians promoting ‘Australian values’ would try to exhibit some themselves, including a ‘fair go’ for all * Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast Tony Abbott and Angus Taylor have argued we must prevent entry of people who do not share our “Australian values”. Abbott wants a return to immigration policies of the 50s, 60s and 70s but without specifically mentioning the White Australia policy. Beyond the strengthening of the character test through potential listing of hate groups that was recently passed by parliament, what would that involve? At present, when a person is granted a permanent or temporary visa, they must digitally sign off on an Australian values statement. This includes values such as respect for the freedom and dignity of the individual, freedom of religion, commitment to the rule of law and parliamentary democracy, equality of opportunity, a “fair go” for all and recognising English as the national language. You can not take citizenship from an Australian citizen. The high court has made it clear. If you are Australian, you are allowed entry into Australia. Doesn’t mean authorities won’t follow up or monitor you, but short of a complete border closure, you can’t be denied entry.
