Good morning, Denton! I’m looking forward to talking with everyone at UNT today!

I grew with all of this and stating the full impacts of your proposed work in a way that your audience can understand (and aligns with their interests/goals) is especially important right now.
Things I currently think you should be considering in your proposals. Although this thread will be NIH-centric, my guess is that some of this applies to NSF, etc. Much is synthesized from public information. Much of this is what we've advised all along, just with, um, more emphasis.

Here we go:

Working outside during the one hour it feels like fall is absolutely lovely- she says when it’s 72 F with only 82% humidity.

Exactly. Congress mandated that HHS track drug use and mental illness, and HHS has an office that fulfills that statute. Every single one of us were laid off. That's an unconstitutional policy change.

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated.

Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!
Today, along with 2,000 other NIH employees, I had to clear out my office 😭

It was truly the honor of my life to work with such incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. I’ve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.

Last night I found out that the NSF math postdoctoral fellowship I applied for is being deleted because it does not comply with Trump’s executive orders on DEI in the federal government. I’m going to answer some FAQs and share some thoughts about this ordeal in this thread 1/n

Instead of cutting costs for working families, Donald Trump is slashing the federal investments that fund their lifesaving care, fuel their local economy, and lower their health care costs.

It’s cruel, short-sighted, and will cost jobs and devastate millions of families.
NIH cuts billions of dollars in biomedical funding, effective immediately
Researchers say it would hurt facilities that work on medical issues such as cancer research and heart disease. Elon Musk contends the old policy was ‘a ripoff.’

Just did this to my Senator in as Southern an accent as I could dredge up.
Call your R reps. If you have a regional accent, make the most of it. Tell them you didn't vote for CANCER and ask them what the hell they're gonna do to stop Musk and Trump. reps.fyi
Now under Trump, the NIH says it is cutting ~$9 billion in federal research grants supporting medical research ranging from cancer to Alzheimer's diseases.

If you want to “Make America Healthy Again,” one of the worst things you can do is slash the budget of the world's largest public funder of biomedical research, the National Institutes of Health.

There has been a lot of discussion about the late Friday decision to cut funds provided through the NIH to scientists, effectively immediately (see @drugmonkey.bsky.social or @jeremyberg.bsky.social). I wanted to explain it in simpler terms for non-scientists (1/n)

A long post about what’s happening to the science funding agencies in the US and why. As mentioned, this one just kept getting longer even as I kept stripping curse words from it.

Look if there is anything my brief time dealing with the DSA taught me it is that a group of dedicated nerds with a book of parliamentary procedure acting in bad faith can obstruct the shit out of anything and grind an org to a halt. Get on it, Dems.

Yes to all of this. Through the bird app, I made friends, survived grad school and my postdoc, and made professional connections. The loss of that community is what makes me sad—not the platform.
For a lot of us, losing Twitter isn’t really about losing ties to the company itself. It’s losing 10+ years of real, asynchronous communities, professional development, the ability to get gigs and clients, the ability to promo/share your art on an extremely broad scale. The loss of that has impact.

About six weeks ago, I picked up a kit to learn to crochet on a whim. I have since learned that my brain quiets when I’m crocheting. I didn’t expect middle age to hit this hard. 😂
