An adjustable crescent wrench. When Samantha was a kid, helping her dad on a project, he called this a monkey wrench. Samantha would giggle and hand the wrench to him like a surgical assistant. Imagine Samantha’s surprise years later when (1) she learned that the monkey wrench was a real tool and not just a goofy name her dad had made up; and (2) that the crescent wrench is NOT the same as a monkey wrench and that her dad, who seemed to know everything, was in fact wrong about something. Well, monkey wrench, crescent wrench, whatever, Samantha has taken a liking to throwing wrenches into things. Literally.

Happy Groundhog Day! I am a fan of the absurdity of weather prognosticating rodents and celebrate Groundhog Day with my thermochromic linocut. The shadow is visible if the ambient temperature is <30°C and disappears when >30°C (and it’s a safe bet winter is over or you are overheating your home). 🧵

I made a poster about native/invasive plants for Bluestem Conservation Cemetery (www.bluestemcemetery.org) as part of my naturalist training impact project. It links to a guide that lists the top invasives on the property and how to address them. docs.google.com/document/d/1...
UNWANTED: Lookout for Invasive Plants! At Bluestem, we are working to restore the land to its native state. We plant and support native species while removing and limiting invasive species. We strive to use ecologically sound practices, such as pulling, mowing, prescribed burns, and when necessary, targeted use of herbicides. What are native plants? Native plants exist in the wild without human intervention. They have co-evolved over time with their complex ecosystem that includes regional climate, soil, water, other plants, pollinators, wildlife and predators. What are invasive plants? Non-native plants are introduced by humans, accidentally or intentionally, to an area where they have not historically existed. Some non-natives become naturalized without causing harm. However some become invasive, spreading aggressively, out-competing and displacing native species, decreasing biodiversity, and degrading wildlife habitat. How can you help? Learn to identify invasive plants and how to remove them effectively. This website lists some of the most common invasive plants present at Bluestem and the best strategies to combat them.
