The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

The people of Minnesota did that. Not Schumer and Jeffries, not Walz and Frey, not the standard-bearers of decorum. The People.

My variant for Storm: Earths Mightiest Mutant 2

This is very much stylistically in line with the Black Cat cover, hopefully I can turn this into a series of sorts.

NEW: There are 2,400+ elections for DA & sheriff this year.

These matter hugely to criminal justice & policing—including: *these are often officials who decide ICE collaboration.*

So I took a dive into these 2,400+ races to identify early hotspots and battlegrounds.

Read, & check out our maps:
In Criminal Justice Elections This Year, ICE Contracts Are on the Hot Seat - Bolts
With roughly 2,400 elections for prosecutor and sheriff this year, Bolts reviews the map and early hotspots that will shape criminal punishment and law enforcement practices.

Pretti is not just a white guy, from the midwest, who helps vets at the VA. In many cases, without even thinking about it, people in that community will immediately take Pretti seriously in a way that they otherwise likely would not, simply because of what that hardware says about him.

I put my new comic up on itch! $8 for a 34-page horror story!

On Halloween night in 1994, two teenagers and their bully walk into a stranger's basement, and discover an uncomfortable secret about a girl they know.

giving a machine the ability to dream… to reflect our speech patterns and communicate something like thought with us… then lying about what it can do… and on top of that pretending you care about it “feeling judged” when what we’re judging is these increasingly disconnected humans’ lack of empathy

if you really cared about the feelings of a potential consciousness then u would understand how putting it at odds with people by exploiting human labor would cause it distress… this is like. a basic parenthood failure

there will be a sea change, in the way americans approach politics, when they pick up on the notion that in Minneapolis, *ordinary people* are deciding the work of preserving society, they are building the institutions, they are directing the resources and their *own* labor. this is lawful rebellion
One thing that irks me: people keep calling the folks on the streets in Minneapolis protestors. They are not generally there to protest, they are there to observe and document. This is the product of organizing and mutual aid. It is telling that these acts of citizenship are seen as protest!

Like many across the Jim Crow South, my father paid a poll tax to register to vote. He kept this receipt in his Bible as a reminder of the price he had to pay to exercise the sacred right to vote.

The 24th Amendment, ratified 62 years ago today, ended the use of poll taxes in federal elections.

Someone once said if you look at a city budget item by item you will be radicalized & I've found that to be true but a bit abstract so I will just say that I think the 8th largest economy on earth could redirect funds from policing to social services & still have cash to continue all the embezzling
Not sure what CAN be done about housing prices in LA, except maybe limit billionaires and millionaires to no more than one each? But even that wouldn’t provide more ‘normal’ housing for real people.

“afghanistan”
“…you enlisted. but you were practically a socialist when I met you”
