Short article I wrote* on recent advances in the story of early Homo sapiens is now available online!

*commissioned as accompanying BBC Human series, although tbh I did not love their Neanderthal episode :-(

Listening to soundscapes from Simon was a somber and moving example of how our natural world is changing around us, in so many ways.

Such an informing and moving interview for my @bbcradio3bot.bsky.social series ‘Symphony of the wild’

Academia.edu is changing its Terms and Conditions, and they're so outrageous (AI training; signing over ownership to them etc) I closed my account today.

Hi folks. I'm not from the US, but I find what's happening to science over there right now absolutely *appalling*.

If you're working in the sciences, I can't imagine the dread you're probably feeling.

I can't do much. But I write a science newsletter, so I can, maybe, do *something*...

A long and depressing piece, but the answers are all in there: high school and college writing are not going to be destroyed by AI unless teachers and professors let it or help. They will only be revived by structuring classes around process and paper.
What Happens After A.I. Destroys College Writing?
The demise of the English paper will end a long intellectual tradition, but it’s also an opportunity to reëxamine the purpose of higher education.

Thanks for this useful video @etobias-musiced.bsky.social; like SO many, I got the "AI created a podcast of your paper" email. And I had an auto-payment of $299 from my bank for a "premium account" which doesn't exist. I deleted my Academia.edu account & will file a fraud charge via my bank. Ugh. 😡
