most people want a quick and simple answer to why AI systems encode/exacerbate societal and historical bias/injustice and due to the reductive but common thinking of "bias in, bias out," the obvious culprit often is training data but this is not entirely true

New pre-print announcement: "Social Bias in Popular Question-Answering Benchmarks"

co-authored by Judith Simon and Sonja Schimmler (arxiv.org/abs/2505.15553)

Voilà, my first ever thread :)
Social Bias in Popular Question-Answering Benchmarks
Question-answering (QA) and reading comprehension (RC) benchmarks are essential for assessing the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) in retrieving and reproducing knowledge. However, we demo...

👉 👈 Meta announced that they're changing their models to reduce "left-leaning [political] bias"--that means leaning them to the political "right". Lots to unpack about what that might mean. So I ran a quick "shot in the dark" study...and found a *political right* bias in Meta models. Some notes.🧵

How can we better capture marginalised voices through computational text analysis? An inspiring roundtable at #COMPTEXT2025 sparked important reflections. Huge thanks to @ahrabhikat.bsky.social, @krangelie.bsky.social, @indiiigo.bsky.social for guiding this vital conversation!

I am looking forward to discussing and raising awareness of this topic with such brilliant colleagues - especially in current times!

Thanks again to @fabiennelind.bsky.social and @ahrabhikat.bsky.social for kindly inviting me!
Absolutely excited to host a roundtable on "Marginalised Voices and Perspectives in Computational Text Analysis" featuring @krangelie.bsky.social and @indiiigo.bsky.social at #COMPTEXT2025 🙌

We'll explore how bias and marginalisation shape methods and models - and thus scientific quality!
#COMPTEXT2025 is just 2 days away, and we cannot be more excited to meet all participants at the University of Vienna. Please find the updated and final program here: bit.ly/42WZKZa. Please find the city guide for your time in Vienna here: bit.ly/3RsZY3R See you later this week!

THREAD: The Trump administration's DOJ has removed a study from the NIJ website that found that immigrants, and particularly undocumented immigrants, commit crimes at significantly lower rates than U.S. citizens.

The study is at odds with the Trump regime's propaganda about immigrants & crime. (1)

Holy moly. I'm trying to write an academic paper, and nearly every application I'm using is not only offering Generative AI as an option for writing, but *pushing it* -- pervading the design to the point where a simple misclick would make my content AI-generated. Here's why that's a problem. 🧵

Despite media representations to the contrary, "women remain underrepresented among faculty in nearly all academic fields...A large-scale survey of the same faculty indicates that the reasons faculty leave are gendered, even for institutions, fields, and career ages in which retention rates are not"
Women leave academia at higher rates than men at every career stage, and attrition is especially high among three groups: tenured faculty, women in non-STEM fields, and women employed at less prestigious institutions, a #ScienceAdvances analysis finds.
Gender and retention patterns among U.S. faculty
Women faculty are more likely to leave their jobs than men, most often due to workplace climate, rather than work-life balance.
