Really hard to say what the worst part of this NEA grant termination letter is (sent at 10pm on a Friday!) but I think it's finding out the federal government's priority for arts funds is now "fostering AI competency" rather than funding literature.

The state of Staten Island’s local MTA bus service:

Customer satisfaction: ⬇️
2024 wait times: Nearly 2x the city average
Peak-hour service delivery: 90.6% (95.9% in the other boroughs)

“The service out here is very unpredictable.”

Staten Islanders Suffer From Bus Slowdown and Increasing Wait Times
Commuters in the oft-neglected borough say they are missing school and church because of buses that can’t seem to find the fast lane.

The women’s health initiative has followed tens of thousands of women for more than 30 years and provided invaluable information on topics like hormone replacement and cancer.

Jay Bhattacharya cutting this program will not only hurt women, it’s also just a colossal waste to lose such an investment.
Well the NIH has cancelled the Women's Health Initiative, the largest study of women in history

It has been running continuously since 1991 and has provided massive key knowledge about diseases in women

Unreal

This, to me, is the most obvious messaging opportunity *ever* for Democrats. Chuck Schumer should be on the ground in Arkansas within 24 hours and Democrats in both houses of Congress should be filing measures to provide federal funds to assist in recovery efforts. Force Republicans to say no.
After 14 tornadoes in 2 days Arkansas is asking for federal assistance — but Trump is saying no. arktimes.com/arkansas-blo...

Observe that the one that complied and the one that didn't comply are treated exactly the same way.
Per source, NIH has been instructed to hold off from issuing ALL awards to Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, and Northwestern (including med schools)

Agency staff have also been instructed to not speak about this funding freeze to grantees and applicants

This is... so grotesque. Absolute anarchy.
The only appropriate response to this is impeachment and removal from office. Every moment the political press spends spinning out theories about 2026 and immigration polling is a minute they are not spending asking Republicans in Congress about their plans to enforce the rule of law

The people who whine “but what can the Democrats do?” will always find their answer just looking at what the Republicans did when they had less power.
In 2021, McConnell successfully filibustered a Democratic CR ahead of a government shutdown and forced them to accept a clean one instead. What happened this week - a total cave on a totally partisan long-term funding bill - hasn’t happened in the 20 years I’ve covered Congress.

Efficiency was not the goal.
That’s pretend. Feudalism is the goal
One thing everyone should understand is that DOGE has created the least efficient conditions for government I've ever seen.
*The working conditions are chaotic.
*No clear sense of who works there.
*Routine processes have been stopped.
*No planning can take place.
*People are incredibly demoralized.
“Nobody feels like their job is safe. Everyone is on edge,” said Kim Hasenkrug, an NIH scientist emeritus… “Even the top people can’t keep track because they’re hiring and firing so much. Direct supervisors of those who were terminated didn’t even know that it was happening.”

The New York Times is the first to put out comprehensive estimates on the cost of a year without U.S.A.I.D. and they’re higher than I thought:
- 1.65 million deaths from AIDS
- 500,000 from lack of vaccines
- 550,000 from lack of food aid
- 290,000 from malaria
- 310,000 from TB
Killing children is by design, I'm afraid. "Pro-natalists" like Musk claim they aren't racist, but their pressure to have children is solely focused on white women, while they back policies that literally kill of non-white children.

He's a eugenicist.

A journey through the front lines of global poverty shows that when the world’s richest men slash aid for the world’s poorest children, the result is sickness, starvation and death.

Briefly going to use this as a jumping off point to talk about art! There's a concept in art history called kunstwollen or "will to art" introduced by Alois Riegel, who was a late 19th century Austrian art historian. It is often used to explain why certain motifs appear at certain times in history.
As part of this, I think it is also useful to emphasise that Henry Ford was a big fan of Hitler. Big technology has always been a close ally of authoritarianism, as we are witnessing in our own times, & that point needs to be made more frequently.
