I wonder if Martin Short based Ed Grimley on Peggy Cass’ Miss Gooch.
The walk, the vocal inflections, the facial expressions.

Now Coral Browne might have been a fun Mame.
She would have made Mame more acid, risqué and less giddy.
Call her Anti-Mame.

I do know that Judy Garland expressed a deep interest in playing in the musical Mame in the late 1960s, but of course her physical & mental health prevented that from ever happening. She loved the songs & was in attendance on Lansbury’s 1st night in 1967.

In light of the news that unparalleled documentarian Frederick Wiseman has died, I’m revisiting @joeengleman.bsky.social’s 2025 @chicagoreader.com cover story on Wiseman hooked to the Siskel Center’s retrospective.
Frederick Wiseman’s portals of possibility - Chicago Reader
The Gene Siskel Film Center’s Worlds of Wiseman series shows us our world. The question is whether or not we can change it.

It’s too much!
Man, this day. Well, 95 and 96 are fine ages, and Wiseman's legacy is beyond secure. I sincerely hope that whoever is entrusted with his legacy of more than three dozen masterful documentaries makes them easier to stream, to own, and to share. We'll be learning from his work as long as movies exist.
RIP Frederick Wiseman <3 <3

And he was the best to ever do it; a thief, who stole many a film right from under the nose of the lead...
“Somebody once said that the best life in the world is the life of a second leading man,” Mr. Duvall told The Times. “You travel, you get a per diem, and you’ve probably got a better part anyway.”

I remember seeing Robert Duvall on so many TV shows in the late 50s/early 60s.
I especially remember an Alfred Hitchcock episode called “Bad Actor” that really made an impression on my kid brain when it aired in 1962.
I’ve searched for it, but this is all I can find.

🐮📖 The short features a gag where Clarabell is reading the controversial 1907 romance novel "Three Weeks" by Elinor Glyn & hides it when Horace comes a-calling.

Never a big fan of his… but being the lazy bum that I am, I love this quote so much I’m reshaping my opinion.
“Early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. Early bird gets the worm, but the second worm gets to live. Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy.”

It is 62 degrees here in the middle of February on the IL/Wisc border.
I have my door open, wind chimes are gently playing, birds are singing & the bugs have come back to life.

Nothing makes sense anymore, even the weather.
