Fury as Indonesia declares late authoritarian ruler Suharto a national hero
Suharto presided over a period marked by rampant corruption, nepotism, censorship and allegations of mass human rights abuses
Indonesia has awarded former authoritarian leader Suharto the title of national hero, in a move that has sparked accusations of historical revisionism in the world’s third-largest democracy.
The award has deepened fears about attempts to whitewash Suharto’s rise and decades-long rule, a period marked by rampant corruption, censorship and accusations of mass human rights violations. Continue reading...

Hundreds of thousands of people, dead because of a decision made by the world's richest man
One analytical model shows that, as of November 5th, the dismantling of U.S.A.I.D. has already caused the deaths of 600,000 people, two-thirds of them children. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/jUzNSc

I enjoyed 3 terrific spooky season movies this past long weekend.
1. Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975). Inchoate but barely suppresed white settler Victorian anxieties in Australia. Plot and soundtrack presage The Virgin Suicides, with clear affinities between the two films.

I approve of this plan, also because I am a political anthropologist
If I were a pro-Dem billionaire one of the first things I'd fund is a two-year study employing 100s of political anthropologists to go to every corner of the US to develop the most comprehensive picture of local power structures in history and then use that to synthesize a 50-state strategy
I *have* a certain idea about what the Dems should maybe do in parts of West Virginia and Ohio based on a particular understanding of that area's history and current dynamics. I have no fucking clue how to go about winning Iowa. Stitching this local knowledge together in a national strategy is key.

Two skeets within minutes, each quoting #Andor, including one from the governor of Illinois. And that's just from today's brief scroll. Maybe it's cheesy, or tainted because its provenance is Disney, but I'm OK with the Andor screenplays serving as the sacred texts for our *hashtag* resistance.
