Current read: Lucky Day
I was sitting peacefully reading Lucky Day by Chuck Tingle and it had the words “enjoying the silence” in it, which immediately reminded me that I still needed to watch the Depeche Mode M concert. My brain is like 85% DM lyrics. Also, I put my book down and watched the concert.

It’s definitely too warm here in Seattle for January. There are gnats in the hummingbird nectar and I just saw an orbweaver out the kitchen window.

I recommended Automatic Noodle by @annaleen.bsky.social to a coworker. He read it within a few days of buying a copy, immediately lend it to another coworker, and now we're planning on going to a biang biang noodle place with the whole team soon 😎

This is why I have come to believe that the most important and influential job right now in the US is lawyer. Everyone should be donating to a civil rights legal fund and an environmental one.

This stupid decision will never move forward because of lawsuits. If only Congress was as effective.

I studied inverts at FHL and it was an amazing experience. Go be in a gorgeous setting with oceanview labs on a lovely island with late summer sun. I wish I could go back! (I do go back to the island and always drive through the labs property but it’s not the same.)
Every other summer we run a fish biomechanics course at Friday Harbor Labs. It is an awesome opportunity to learn the tools of biovisualization while experiencing the rich fish diversity of the Salish Sea. Come join us!

Other things that do more harm than good when you don't count the number of lives they save:

- air bags (messy)
- traffic lights (expensive)
- bridge inspections (boring)
- carbon monoxide alarms (battery low beep so annoying)

This week, a few writers have told me they don't know how to promote their books in the face of the ever-horrifying news cycle. So just for the record: PLEASE promote your books. We need your books. Your histories, your fictions, your contributions to human knowledge. Without them, what's the point?

If you are in Washington, please sign in Pro on this bill!
This bill to restrict the use of facial coverings by law enforcement officers is getting a public hearing on the very first day of Washington's legislative session, next Monday.

You can weigh in on it, without testifying, here:

Legislators Must Save Washington's Talking Book and Braille Library
Just $3 million will help preserve this critical resource after last year's devastating state budget cuts.

This lyric hit me hard today:

Walked out this morning,
Don't believe what I saw
Hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore
Seems I'm not alone at being alone
Hundred billion castaways, looking for a home

We’re all sending out SOS messages and there’s nobody to answer because we all need help.

What are we are supposed to do when the checks and balances of our government are sitting unused. Without them, the ineffective Democratic Party and the fascist Republicans are on the same side, the side of active harm against the nation and its people. How do we fight this before it is too late?

Today’s “bad photo through the window” visitor for #NationalBirdDay. The flickers have finally figured out good positioning on the suet cage so that they can stab down like they want to.

Also, my husband is accusing me of reverting all of the local birds to carnivores.

This literally changes day to day. There are very few Ghibli films that are not my favorites. Today I’ll pick Whisper of the Heart.
In honor of Hayao Miyazaki's birthday, what's your favorite Studio Ghibli film? Doesn't have to be the one you think is "the best," just the one that nestled in your heart. Mine is Howl's Moving Castle.
