Here's a🧵about the San Francisco Egg Wars of the 1800s. It has bloody gunfights, marauding pirates, a bunch of (literally) batshit deaths & some nasty looking eggs...

This was such a fun photo to set up, taken by Thomas Reiter through a sleep station window on Mir. The sun was so bright we were all squinting like crazy. But I love how it shows the texture of the Shuttle's rough, protective hide, and the glimpse of humanity (and my moustache) against the universe.

HMHS Britannic sank on this day in 1916. She had left Southampton on 12 November but hit a mine in the Aegean Sea nine days later. Thirty people died. Among the survivors were Violet Jessop, Arthur Priest, and Archie Jewell, who had all survived the sinking of Britannic’s sister, Titanic, in 1912.

#OTD in 1953, Scott Crossfield was the first man to break the Mach 2 barrier in Douglas D-558-II Skyrocket #37974 NACA-144.

Crossfield reached Mach 2.005, which was 25% beyond the aircraft's original design intention.

Scott Crossfield was a badass.
