Over the past decade, the number of children and adolescents who question their sex and identify as transgender or nonbinary has grown significantly. Many have been diagnosed with a condition known as “gender dysphoria” and offered a treatment approach known as “gender-affirming care.” This approach emphasizes social affirmation of a child’s self-reported identity; puberty suppressing drugs to prevent the onset of puberty; cross-sex hormones to spur the secondary sex characteristics of the opposite sex; and surgeries including mastectomy and (in rare cases) vaginoplasty. Thousands of American children and adolescents have received these interventions.

Urban Ore workers are starting an open-ended strike on Saturday. Details from the workers are in this press release...
URBAN ORE WORKERS, IWW I.U. 670, BEGIN UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICE STRIKE Berkeley, California - IWW workers at Urban Ore, a salvage yard and reuse store in Berkeley, are going on strike beginning Saturday, March 22nd. The strike is open-ended and in protest of unfair labor practices committed by Urban Ore that have prevented workers from reaching their first collective bargaining agreement despite nearly 2 years of bargaining. The union will be holding a rally on the first day of the strike outside the front gates of Urban Ore at 1 pm. After winning their union certification election with the Industrial Workers of the World in April of 2023, Urban Ore workers began bargaining with their employer to address issues in the workplace, including rising cost of living, understaffing and work hours. Despite annual revenue at Urban Ore increasing from 2023 to 2024, wages have gone down. The starting wage at Urban Ore averaged $21.50/hr last year, and there are no scheduled raises or cost of living adjustments for workers. Urban Ore’s pay structure is especially concerning to workers. The starting base wage for workers is $13.60/hr, with the remainder of wages coming from revenue-sharing incentive pay. Workers want to reform this wage structure because it is volatile and because the incentive pay decreases with increased staffing, effectively penalizing workers for safer staffing levels. Sarah Mossler, a Receiving Department worker, notes that while this pay structure helps the company balance its expenses when revenue fluctuates, it makes it hard for workers to budget and plan for their own living costs: “At the bargaining table, we have heard Urban Ore's owners wax poetic about their preference for ‘bamboo scaffolding’ over ‘steel scaffolding’, which is to say they prefer the flexibility to operate in a way that shifts material precarity away from the business and onto the workers. Urban Ore’s ‘bamboo scaffolding’ is not stable enough for workers.” Nearly two years into bargaining, these issues persist because the owners of Urban Ore are unwilling to bargain with workers in good faith. The employer has cancelled and delayed bargaining sessions, refused to furnish information necessary to bargain, and brought forward a lead negotiator with insufficient authority to bargain, all while coercing employees to not participate in protected concerted union activities. In the course of bargaining, the union has filed Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charges with the NLRB, held informational pickets, and attempted mediated bargaining with Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services. However, these actions have been insufficient in getting the employer to bargain in good faith. Workers have decided to strike to compel the employer to reach a fair agreement. Earlier this month, 93% of voting workers voted to authorize the strike, which the union’s bargaining committee announced on March 10th. Benno Giammarinaro, a Receiving Department worker, believes workers need to strike to get the owners to bargain fairly: “Our employer’s refusal to bargain in good faith has made it clear that they do not respect the value of our labor; they've even told us to look for other jobs if we want to better our pay and working conditions. But we know that our work is necessary for Urban Ore to operate. We are prepared to stay on the picket line until the owners recognize that they rely on our labor and agree to a fair contract.” Workers will be striking from 8 am - 5 pm, Monday through Saturday, and 9 am - 5 pm on Sundays, beginning this Saturday, March 22nd. Members of the community that wish to support workers can do so by joining the picket line or donating to the GoFundMe page that the union will be launching on Saturday to support striking workers. You know this. The Democrats are impotent and the law is Trump's weapon. You know this too. They are trying to herd us into a nightmare: Al-Monarchy-Corporate-Police-State-Climate-Apocalypse. We know what we have to do. A WARNING: An error was made 20 years ago. By 2000, social movements had learned how to shut down entire cities, outflanking and outmaneuvering the police. When the anti-Iraq war movement started, those tactics were set aside in a shift to peaceful mass marches led by groups like ANSWER. These orgs preferred 100,000 people carrying signs in the hope that those in power would care. They didn't care then, they don't care now. We all know that. A PROPOSAL: Remember May and June of 2020? The George Floyd Rebellion opened with a police precinct burned, cop cars disabled, corporate stores looted across the country. They were scared and changed their policies, bending in the face of real popular power. Now they're striking back. 2020, but bigger, is our only shot. Fascist politicians need the police. But we know masses of people can get the better of the police, their cars, equipment, cameras. All we have to do is to start acting like our friends, neighbors, and our own lives are at stake. All other options have been exhausted. We have to pull down the new fascism before it consolidates control. If we settle for waving signs and chanting, our fate is sealed. If we remember the summer of 2020, we stand a fighting chance. Look for those pushing and help them push harder. Move together. Be water. They can control a march of 10,000 - they can't control 10 marches of 1000. De-arrest. Don't let people get grabbed. If they do, don't let their cars or busses leave. They only care about money, so causing monetary losses is your only vote. On the inside, the demonstration is an organism of care and support. On the outside, it is ferocious and uncontrollable.
