When I was first diagnosed at 19, I was deemed "high-functioning" because I flew under the radar for all that time*, but I've always struggled with executive function issues (which have only increased as I've gotten older), and I regularly encounter barriers to meaningful employment.
Why functioning labels are hurtful: A “high-functioning” person may be having a bad day & have a hard time with self-care tasks like bathing, cooking, shopping, & dressing.
