Steinrod from his bride of a few minutes here and tied him to a tele- phone pole. where he was kept prison. er for an hour He had on no over- coat and the temperature was below freezing. Stein rod had been married to Mrs. Ada M Smith. a young widow. The girls caught him shortly after the cere mony and, assisted bv several young men, tied him to the telephone pole. and the, according to Steinrod, slapped his face, kicked his shins, and otherwise maltreated him. The next morning Steinrod swore out war rants for all those in the crowd he had recognized. The girls deny that they slapped Steinrod or kicked hint. They say merely chucked him under the chin and caressed him, all in good natured fun. Steinrod declares hat the girls were jealous because he married the widow.

"Six ounces best gin, half ounce Murax compound. half ounce fluid extract Buchu."This mix- ture taken in doses of one to two teaspoonfuls after each meal and at bed time will quickly stop such symptoms as pain in the back, rheu- matic sorenes in the joints, frequent, scanty or painful urination highly colored or scalding urine, pains in groin, dull pains in back of head, dizziness, irritability all of which are sure signs of kidney trouble and must have prompt attention to pre- vent kidney disease such as Bright •s disease, chronic rheumatism or dia- betes. First-class druggists keep the above ingredients. Some folks prefer to get the gin at a good liquor store. Anyone can mix.

Jan. 9.— Caged in an elevator which fell from the twelfth floor of the railway ex- change building to the bottom of the shaft, two women and the op- erator of the car miraculously es- caped death here with only minor injuries. The two passengers were scrub women employed in the build- ing. The car fell with such force that it rebounded nearly to the third floor when it struck a safety device at the bottom of the shaft.

ACCUSED WIFE OF RICH MAN SMILES When Mrs. Schenk Is Brought Into Court She Beams on Judge and Jurors WHEELING, W. va.. Jan. 9.—The criminal court room in the Ohio county court house was packed to the doors and crowds were standing in the aisles when the trial of Mrs. Laura Farnsworth Schenk for the alleged poisoning of her husband, John O. Schenk. the millionaire pack- er, opened at 9:30 a. m. At 9:35 Mrs. Schenk came through the pris- oner's entrance from the Bridge of Sighs connecting the court room with the jail. She was accompanied by two of her attorneys. Frank and J. J. P. O'Brien. She smiled at the judge and newspaper men. She was dressed in a dark blue suit with pearly gray hat. The state and defense announced "ready" at 9:35 and the jury roll was called. By agreement a half dozen of the principal witnesses were excused un- til 2:30 p. m. More Smiles The first prospective juror ques- tioned was Harry Matthews, Wheel- ing mill workers. Hrs. Schenk lean- ed across the table and smiled when Matthews acknowledged that he had formed an opinion of the case through newspaper accounts. The state passed him and he was tenta- tively accepted by the defense. At 10 0'clock eight jurors had been accepted.

Drivers warned to 'always secure items' after recent traffic stop in Geistown Borough By wjac staff Picture of a blue car stopped by the side of a road near the cemetery, with a large television wedged in between the hood and the engine. The hood is raised, and the television appears to actually be bigger than the front portion of the car The issue, police say the driver attempted to store the TV underneath the hood of the vehicle. Police further stated that the driver's hood was reportedly up, blocking the driver's view of the roadway, when the traffic stop was made.

It is the custom in Paris, in New York, and in several other cities, both in Europe and America, for gentlemen to call upon the whole circle of their lady acquaintances on the first day of the year. The omission of 'j' this observance in regard to any particular family, would be considered a decided slight. Its influence on the social intercourse of families is very salutary ; the first day of the year is considered a day of kindness and reconciliation, on which petty differences are forgotten, and trifling injuries forgiven. It sometimes happens, that between friends long connected, a misunderstanding takes place. Each is too proud to make concessions, alienation follows, and thus are two families, very probably, permanently estranged. But on this day of mutual amnesty^ each of the offended parties calls on the wife of the other, kind feelings are recalled, past grievances are forgotten, and at their next meeting they take each other by the hand, and are again friends.

From source: (George Henry) Boughton made his name with American colonial subjects and exhibited examples in London and New York from the 1860s through the 1890s. The present image from 1882, imagines New York shortly after the British took over from the Dutch in 1675 (in 1876 Boughton had painted "New Year’s Day in New Amsterdam," set around 1640). "The Graphic" chose this subject for a color-printed wood engraving, one of those they published annually as a premium for readers at Christmas, and the image centers on a young man who lifts his plumed hat to kiss a young woman wearing a ruff, fur-edged cape and muff. On April 3, 1870 "Harper's Weekly" reissued the print in New York, an indication of how British prints were often quickly recirculated by American publishers.
