Tiny light, keep on shining, hold back the dark. Lives in Sicily with an embarrassing number of cats. Will grumble and post pictures of cats, Sicily and food. Says fuck and variations of (fucker, FFS) too much. Sorry. Roof appreciator

So many Arundhati Roy quotes going through my head atm.

"The trouble is that once you see it, you can't unsee it. And once you've seen it, keeping quiet, saying nothing, becomes as political an act as speaking out. There's no innocence. Either way, you're accountable"
It's a @themountaingoats.bsky.social kind of day.

I am going to make it through this year if it kills me.

The weather has been so awful that I have barely seen the islands for a month. Still blurry tonight but two out of three (ain't bad)

I HAVE A SEALED BEDROOM ROOF! It only took from 7th January. The test will be if it leaks over nextfew days as it isn't completely finished yet.

When I lived in the old house we had a body wash up on the beach and a family out there does not know what happened. One world, no borders. Fortress Europe kills and kills and kills.
The rough seas of the past few days have been washing up bodies onto beaches in Sicily and Calabria, just a small number of the more than a thousand people who drowned attempting to cross the Mediterranean three weeks ago during Storm Harry.

Can't. Coming out of my cage
Can't. Taking Manhattan and then Berlin.
Can't. Walking 500 miles (and 500 more).

There is no rain. There is no wind. The builders will put the metal ridge pole on my bedroom today. No more leaks (in that room, everything else has to wait for next week)

Ricky does not want me to refurbish the bathroom. He likes it as it is. Sorry Ricky, it's on my list.

Anyway the other thing that's forming out of this is the seed of a poem. Been a while. It might grow.

Weathered.

Spring will come.

One thing about this roof fiasco is I now know the Italian words for things that I dont know the English word for. Speaking 2 languages is weird. Never thought I could do it.

Good things. Made pancakes with freshly squeezed lemon juice. There's an abandoned garden with citrus trees near the house. Winds are gale force again so I have already dried one load of heavy cotton sheets and another load of jeans and thick hoodies is washing now. Smol lying on my arm as I type.

I used to be able to cultivate a Zen like calm but this roof has broken me.
February 17, 2026 at 6:45 AM
And I had to deal with a dead rabbit this morning. Bubble dragged it to the door, Smol stole it and ran into the house, chased him round the house, Jamie stole it and I managed to get him to drop it and fend the others off while I did the inside out bag and bit of kitchen roll corpse removal.

Baning my head repeatedly against any available flat surface. JUST FINISH MY FUCKING ROOF
February 16, 2026 at 8:24 AM
No electric at all since 2pm (low voltage before) but I have this.
February 13, 2026 at 5:59 PM
It is a perfect drying day but I dont have enough electricity to run the washing machine.
February 13, 2026 at 8:43 AM
Wind so strong that it has 1. Torn one of my shutters from its hinge (plank of wood nailed across them for now) 2. Sent a couple of old tiles flying off 3. Made tree near house sway along entire length and lift - it may come down. All cats are in, as I did in the cyclone. Had enough of weather now.
February 12, 2026 at 6:50 PM
Love (don't love) being woken at 3am by the plink plink sound of rain hitting the row of pans in the bedroom. Then going to check all the other leaks. Howling wind, sideways rain. Only a few more days (I have been saying this since 7th January) until they can finish.
February 12, 2026 at 7:50 AM
Update. Still raining, roof still leaking. My tether is miles behind me. Have no brain capacity left, haven't read a book for over a week.

On Monday weather is meant to break for the 3 days they need to finish the roof.

Meanwhile it is grey and grim, like being in the UK.

Cats are great.

Might be able to have a fire tonight, new chimney going in.

10 years ago today I arrived in Sicily for a 5 month teaching contract. I fell in love with the island before my feet touched the ground, seeing it from the plane. It is chaotic, frustrating, infuriating and has more warmth, courage and beauty than anywhere else. Sono a casa.
February 5, 2026 at 1:11 PM
It still leaks. But only a couple of drops in a couple of places. It will all get sorted. Big sigh.
February 4, 2026 at 8:08 AM
Waiting for the storm to arrive.
February 4, 2026 at 4:27 AM
Waiting for rain to see if there are any leaks. The ridge pole is just old tiles covering the two sections of new roof, so who knows. Appreciate your roof, you'd miss it if it wasn't there.

I know it is pointless saying this but I will do it anyway. Just imagine the coverage there would be if a ferry or cruise ship had sunk in a storm in the Mediterranean with the loss of a thousand lives and compare it with the attention given to a thousand people in migrant boats drowning in a storm.
