The Slave Societies Digital Archive was where I trained in all things digital and databases. Grants from the NEH and the Andrew Mellon Foundation made it possible for this amazing database to grow and for dozens of scholars to learn.

This is huge.

This stunning fresco probably shows one of the most famous figures from the long Roman Empire history - the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI Dragases Palaiologos!

Recently discovered during renovations of the Taxiarchon Monastery in Aigialeia.

If you’re wondering what a spreadsheet looked like in 1800 BCE, here is one that tallies foodstuffs for cattle received by four cowherds.

Three are named in the right hand column as Ubar-Shamash, Sin-iddinam, Sin-re’um, and the last one making the record simply writes “mine”

Would have been screwed.
Spare a kind thought, Bluesky pals, for the undergrads in my department whose senior theses are due at 4 pm tomorrow, & who have just discovered that because the clocks have sprung forward overnight they have lost an hour of last-minute writing.

I found Viabundus today, which allows one to plot travel routes in central and parts of eastern Europe with a slider to choose a date between 1350 and 1650.

In particular, I'm enjoying this reading list on disability in Premodern and Early Japan, with a great cover photo that is a reminder that the tōdō guild of the blind were the primary contributors to modern koto playing styles and repertories (japanpastandpresent.org/en/teaching-...)

Circulations
This year's symposium takes the notion of circulation as a starting point to consider not only how manuscripts produced in various scribal cultures circulated knowledge, ideas, values, and information...

Reminder that chores and luxuries are constructed.

Also I’m pretty sure grocery hub and organized/coordinated delivery would cut down emissions.
Electric Refrigerator ad, 1927.

Having groceries delivered and sticking them in an electric fridge feels very modern, but is something some people did 100 years ago!

For the newbies, one of the great features on here is that when someone has tried to quote-post dunk on you, hit the … and select “detach quote” and nobody will see the post or who wrote it and they will look like an asshole. (Blocking works like this too.)

The rule I made for myself is when I want to say something catty here on Bluesky, I post a picture of a cat instead. Healthier for me, and everyone loves a cat picture.
I made a rule for myself that I can’t subtweet. But then something would happen and I’d want to subtweet. But then I wanted to talk about how I wasn’t subtweeting. And that would be a subtweet in and of itself.

So many posts I wrote and deleted without sending.
