Just returned to classroom teaching, I'm struck by how many "research-based" things I find harmful or unhelpful. Been looking into the studies and questioning citations. Rachel has done that with SOM. Great episode about the "Science of Math". To be clear, I'm very anti-SOM. Link below.

In times like this there’s a real risk that comes with framing decency as radical.

When we talk about being radicalized we need to go beyond empathy and into collective struggle against systems of oppression.

Caring for others is necessary, but it’s not sufficient.

"How can we, all of us, commit right now to a new kind of 'public education' — not supplanting or replacing formal schools, but subverting an authoritarian grip on them?"
Trump’s Reign of Terror on Schools—and How We Fight Back
It’s not enough to be afraid of the laws and rules we don’t want to see in schools. We have to clarify our visions of what we are fighting for.

Pro tip: Wearing a mask is a powerful protest tool that visually communicates the reckless denial of anti-vaxxers, fossil fuel shills etc.

Wearing a mask at a protest is also praxis. Not only are you protesting those who will spread harm, you are actively stopping it yourself.

When a school leader asked, “have you considered that maybe your kids can’t handle inquiry?” All I could say was, “No. I have not considered that.” #iteachmath #thinkingisequity

Trying to frame not working this break as needed rest, not missed opportunity to work. It’s a process! And I enjoyed my time with loved ones so much!

Please read this. I won't try to describe how it felt when I read it. Thank you to the author for sharing this.
A new article, entitled “#GenocideMath, Problem Set 1” has been published. The article has been published anonymously, which we explain in the editorial comment appended to the end of the article.

Labor justice is disability justice.

Climate justice is disability justice.

Queer justice is disability justice.

Racial justice is disability justice.

Disability is extremely intersectional: you canNOT do the work to truly correct any of these issues without actively including disabled people.

Excited to share my new article in Theory Into Practice "Centering students’ thinking with the rights of the learner to counter deficit narratives in mathematics". Would love feedback.

Chicago educators helped create bargaining for the common good in 2012 and we haven’t stopped thinking of how to use our contract to provide societal change. Check out our demand for green healthy schools

Serious question: Why did you stop wearing a mask (if you did)? Specifically at conferences. I wear a mask everyday still (while teaching MS, at the grocery store, always). It’s a disability justice issue. I need to know more about why. (Full context, got covid again, 1 of very few masked people)
