Refusing to "trust the experts" is meant to be a brave, responsible position.

But (as Carl explains in the thread) there is too much knowledge in the world. You have to trust *somebody*, much of the time.

If you have no trust in experts, you end up trusting the idiots.
1. "'Trusting the experts is not a feature of either a science or democracy," Kennedy said."

It's literally a vital feature of both science and of representative democracy.

I've written a fair bit about trust in expertise as a vital mechanism in the collective epistemology of science.
RFK Jr. in interview with Scripps News: ‘Trusting the experts is not science’
HHS Secretary RFK Jr. sat down with Scripps News for a wide-ranging interview, discussing mRNA vaccine funding policy changes and a recent shooting at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Something that I have been thinking about with attribution of "PhD level intelligence" or "PhD level expertise" to a machine is that it reflects an increasing trend among these AI bros and their sycophants to want the products of highly skilled training without actually doing any of the work.

among the things we apparently need to do a better job of going forward - as a society, it seems - is communicating the basic conceit of what learning is and why we value it. a problem that we in higher ed share with our K-12 colleagues

4. I've worried for years that by promoting a science-in-crisis narrative, the metascience / science reform movement runs the risk of playing useful idiot to those who would like to reduce the influence of science in policy and regulation. Just look at the funding pouring in from Koch, Arnold, etc.

It would be wildly foolish it is to rely on any sort of AI to make decisions in tense international situations.

But using an LLM to do so is terrifyingly stupid. It's a category error to think that a machine designed to generate plausible text would be good at reasoning about existential risk.
Is AI the future of America's foreign policy? Some experts think so
Large language models like ChatGPT and DeepSeek are increasingly being looked at for their potential to help make decisions in high-stakes situations.

You’re brilliant! You balance and manage SO MUCH. You bring excellence, creativity, innovation, and humanity to the world.

If I hadn’t seen others having families AND doing science, I wouldn’t have realized I could do it, too.

Thank you ❤️

Ann is an author.

Her context is about usability, not technical capacity. On the merits of her context, she is correct.

Technical specificity does not change her conclusions.
