Context: this speech is from SIR THOMAS MORE, a history written, as near as scholars can tell, in the early 1600s by 6 or 7 people including Dekker, Heywood, Chettle, Shakespeare, and Munday.

It was never performed, because Jacobean England was a police state and it was banned by the censor.
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

Am reading my 5th Jane Austen novel: Mansfield Park, and oh man. I identify SO HARD with Fanny. Not sure what that says about me.

(Narrator: She knows EXACTLY what that says about her.)

I talk about romantasy.

Let's Talk About Romantasy
There's a reason that reading a randomly chosen romantasy book can sometimes feel like an exercise in frustration, because a romantasy writer is trying to balance three big things extremely well: plot...

ICE shows us that a predator wants to be a predator wants to be a predator.

It doesn't matter what she was wearing.
Or that he walked through the wrong neighborhood.
Or how they said those words.

They don't care. They'll find a reason that you deserved it.

I can't decide if life is too short to read a bad book, or if reading bad books can make your own writing better.

Either way, the (no, I'm not going to name it) book I'm reading now fails at plot, characterization, and worldbuilding.

Prose at least isn't half-bad.

II was about to say that this post aged like milk. Then again, it's a post speaking to how pissed off about what people are getting away with right now.

So, guess it's aging more like a good soft cheese. My furor is getting more and more pungent.
It's 2026! Sometimes it doesn't feel like it, but when you're shoved into a rodeo for the year of the horse, you hang on for dear life and let yourself get angry. #2026 #writesky #newyear #letssurvive2026together

As an update, the scammers are getting better. Check out this new scam email I received today. 1/

I've started to take careful note to look for the audio narrator's name when I check out an audiobook on Libby.

Audiobook narrators often MAKE the book experience, and I have no desire to listen to the slop machine belch back a sludge of stolen voices. #booksky #audiobooks #antiAI

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

Yes. Read the whole thing.

For folks who don’t know, spider/scrapers that hit at speeds normal humans can’t/don’t is a real problem for paying the bills on server loads.

This gives Wikimedia a way to at least get infrastructure support financially for that traffic.
This is really one of those "READ THE ARTICLE" moment. They want AI companies to use a dedicated API and PAY to get Wikipedia content instead of just scraping it as regular traffic. That's all.
