I love this - I think this is why so many writers love baseball.
Did not expect one of the best paragraphs I’d read about baseball would come from an Irish newspaper

Since it's Halloween, it bears repeating that I published a ghost story this month. Enjoy this quick read!

I, Balius Economou, became both an engineer and the first Greek to set foot on the Moon. And now I’m a ghost, thanks to you, Misha Pasternak. You bastard.

You can never go wrong with LeGuin.
Resource.

If your kids like the boy wizard books, but you don't want to support a bigot, here are some alternatives.

Tiffany Aching Books by Terry Pratchett.
Earthsea books by Ursula K LeGuin
Young Wizards by Diane Duane

All much better and written by better people.

We close out Issue 28 with an honest-to-goodness ghost story, albeit one that's set in the depths of space. But this space ghost is "The Poltergeist of Fastini Crater," and it's not in a good mood, as we learn in @karldandenell.bsky.social's story.

From the Larchives: The Rocky Horus Picture Scroll. One of my favorite works. I had the assistance of an Egyptology PhD student to translate the Time Warp phonetically. Enjoy :)

The Democrats need to get a hell of a lot of cameras on the White House and plaster the photos everywhere. It's not just the brazen symbol of a megalomaniac destroying national heritage; it's happening during a government shutdown when ordinary people aren't getting paid. Make every American see it.

In July 1951, "Steel Grandpa" Gustaf Håkansson, 66, unofficially rode the Sverigeloppet, a 1000-mile race through Sweden. By not sleeping he arrived a day before the other riders, crossing the finish line on a flat tire.

Happy #BicycleBirthday, Gustaf!

Yikes. I think of all my poor folks in IT who are losing their jobs because their companies have "pivoted" to AI.
When this bubble pops it's going to be even messier than the dot com crash.
"The hundreds of billions of dollars companies are investing in AI now account for an astonishing 40 per cent share of US GDP growth this year... In a way, then, America has become one big bet on AI."

5/5 serious stars to WHERE THE AXE IS BURIED by Ray Naylor. I've chatted with the author on a few occasions and was always impressed by his intelligence and good humor. Read his stuff. www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Karl's review of Where the Axe Is Buried
5/5: Dang — Ray Nayler just gets better with each book. WHERE THE AXE IS BURIED is a departure from his previous works: darker and challenging. The future speculated here could happen very very soon. ...
