For non-scientists: the funding rate is somewhere between 7% to ~25% (rare) for NIH or NSF grants, depending on where you are applying. Grants are reviewed by a panel of peers who read the grants, score them, then debate the ratings for 1-2 days to rank them. It is INCREDIBLY competitive already.
Republican Senator Katie Britt: We need to create a system "where the beat idea wins... This is our opportunity to make a dollar go further and to make it have a greater impact."

(NIH already generates $2.56 for every $1 spent it spends on research.)

Ant with treehopper friend. Ants and treehoppers often have mutually beneficial relationships. Treehoppers drink sap and pee out sugary waste called honeydew. Ants drink the honeydew and protect treehoppers from predators.

In the 1950s, the NSF began laying foundations for American science.
After WWII devastated Europe’s research infrastructure, the U.S. stepped up—with the newly founded NSF funding massive projects like the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in West Virginia.

Without the National Science Foundation, I'd be nothing.

NSF funded my PhD (GRF, DDIG) on bird origins and later my work on dinosaur extinction & rise of mammals.

Now it's being dismantled for pure political reasons. Our country culture & economy will all suffer. Disgraceful!

Sharks were thought to be universally silent, but this houndshark appears to make metallic clicking sounds.
Sharks aren’t silent after all
A species of houndshark called Mustelus lenticulatus makes sharp clicking noises when handled. Until now, sharks as a group were thought to be universally quiet
