Did a little pondcasting today with my pal @zachlowenba.bsky.social, including:

* Most intriguing games left on the NBA schedule
* Rough draft All-NBA teams
* Rough draft MVP rankings

And the usual general merriment.

Boston is going to sign another player to a 10 Day deal today, to meet the 14-player roster minimum rules.
After that, expect another period with a short roster, as Boston tries to squeeze as many days as possible, while staying under the tax, before filling out the roster to 15.
The Boston Celtics are signing Dalano Banton to a 10 Day contract, according to @mikeascotto.bsky.social.

Broke down in depth how Boston is going to handle the remainder of the season for their roster with @johnkaralis.com on Locked On Celtics last night!

Yossi got it right on the path the C's are following. Tonje gets a 10-day instead of the alternative where he spends time on a rest-of-season contract.
The Boston Celtics must sign two players today after having fewer than 14 for two weeks.

Two 10-day contracts, including one for one of their two-way rookies, would help them remain under the luxury tax line while fulfilling minimum roster requirements at the end of the season.

This might be the best idea I've seen yet. Very poorly explained even for an academic pub, but the idea (rewarding the best lotto odds to the teams that have been outside the 'offs most, & those who have been furthest least) might be the simplest, easiest way to break the incentive issues.

I'd push back on some of this (there are places that could work in V de Mex, but they wouldn't be in the city center), but Antonio nails the main obstacle, namely an investor group willing to make the substantial investments needed. US politics certainly aren't helping, either.
The NBA used to hint at the possibility of Mexican expansion all the time. So why hasn't it happened? @chapulana.bsky.social went deep on the thriving Capitanes, and why their success also may not directly translate to an NBA team:
How did all the talk of NBA expansion leave Mexico behind?
The long-whispered possibility of NBA expansion to Mexico is closer than ever, but still just out of reach.

An anti-tanking measure that came up via friend of the pod Evan T's brilliance was harnessing point differential. Then it struck us maybe just keeping things the same while making it so losses by more than say, 10 points count as lottery wins might do the trick. Thoughts?
February 14, 2026 at 9:57 PM
This. Nobody is denying excessive tanking is bad, but draft class strength matters, fans of tanking teams mostly get & support it, & this system creates aspects of the league we love, from hope to novelty. It just needs tweaking.
