It's starting to feel like our current generation of "smart" products need to replace "smart" with "vulnerable". The recent AWS downtime hits that home more than ever.

Call me bonkers, but I like my coffee mugs, shirts and beds dumb.

This new option (in iOS 26.1 beta 4) is dramatically better for everything and should be the default.

My take codepen.io/thebabydino/...

Changes:
✨ `grid` + `position: sticky` instead of `position: absolute` to position lateral sideways links
✨ `writing-mode` instead of `transform` for these links to simplify positioning
✨ `clamp()` values instead of MQs ⇒ smooth changes instead of abrupt

I dug into progressive image rendering and found a bunch of common assumptions aren't quite true.

➡️ JPEG & WebP progressive-renders worse in Safari
➡️ AVIF _does_ support progressive
➡️ But JPEG XL in Safari doesn't
➡️ JPEG XL decodes much slower than AVIF
⬇️ and more

progressive css-only pagination indicators w/ anchor positioning 👨‍🍳

nav::before { position-anchor: --h; }
nav::before { left: anchor(left); }
a:hover { anchor-name: --h; }

use the nav pseudoelements, ::before for intent, ::after for current 🤙

TIL: the scroll-margin CSS property.

If you have a sticky header and are annoyed that when you click an anchor it goes under the header, you want a scroll-margin. Setting, e.g., scroll-margin-top: 150px will scroll to 150px below where it would have.

developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/W...
scroll-margin - CSS | MDN
The scroll-margin shorthand property sets all of the scroll margins of an element at once, assigning values much like the margin property does for margins of an element.

New from 404 Media: Google removed an ICE-spotting app too. Called Red Dot, an immigration support group on the ground in Chicago told me it was using it. Google now removed, just like Apple did with ICEBlock after DOJ pressure. Google calls ICE vulnerable group
