Because, in my opinion, the greatest dilemma public colleges across the country face is that they NEVER receive enough state or federal funding. So they are forced to submit grant applications to the country’s philanthropic organizations to fit an ever-growing gap. THIS IS THE ENTIRE PROBLEM.

🗃️ Tyler Austin Harper’s insane Andrew Mellon Foundation hit piece, which of course @theatlantic.com was happy to print, has rightfully pissed off everyone in the Humanities.

As someone who works in higher education funding, here is a 🧵 on why this article is even more infuriating than you think.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has become the country’s preeminent funder of humanities research, Tyler Austin Harper writes. Is it saving American arts and letters—or killing them?
What Is the Mellon Foundation Doing to Higher Education?
Its role as the country’s preeminent funder of humanities research has granted the foundation—and its president—enormous influence over American arts and letters.

Age verification? I called a number I memorized to learn what the weather forecast was for the day.

Colleges need to stop trying to teach students how to use AI. Even in the theoretical use cases, genAI requires the expertise to know the process and outcome WITHOUT IT to be able to use it for shortcuts and then THOROUGHLY vet the product. EXPERTISE. Students don't have that, they're students.

I just submitted a peer‑review report for an article I truly hope will make it into print! The piece showcases remarkable historical detective work and is written with real beauty.

Thoughtful peer review takes time, and the time invested benefits everyone involved.

You can test new tech ideas using the Seinfeld Test

Would the product eliminate the plot of an episode? (Google maps, cell phones, paypal, battery packs)

Good tech.

Would the product inspire new Seinfeld plots? (NFTs, AI chatbots, crypto currency, blindboxes, metaverse land sales)

Bad tech.

For The Ringer, I wrote about how amazing it was that the brilliant Catherine O'Hara finally became a superstar in her 60s, and how sad it is that she was taken from us just when we had all finally begun to appreciate her:
Catherine O’Hara Could Do Anything
And she pretty much did everything. The only tragedy is that it feels like she was just beginning to get the recognition her decades-long career always deserved.

Any historians of Christianity who'd like to do a panel for ASCH on archives and, perhaps, rightwing Christians and/or unsavory individuals? I want to talk about a very obscure person and whether I should just leave him dead. Are some ppl not worth "recovering?" Why or why not, how to decide, etc.

Family history work depends on the material lives of records: how they were created, used, marked, preserved, or repaired.

Come hang with me and @ccjones.bsky.social and Amy Harris and chat about archives, archival practice, and genealogy!!
