Keep this in mind if you find yourself in a "boring" part of Moby Dick. That extraneous detail is a man so traumatized that he is desperate to not think about it. He is torn between knowing he needs to get it off his chest and never wanting to think about it again. 🐋
He's definitely writing this from a place of extreme trauma. One of the reasons he's going into so much seemingly mundane detail is he does not want to let himself remember it, as much as he knows he needs to, so he's trying to delay dealing with it. He is stalling because he cannot think about it.

This is why I say hope is a weapon. Without hope we cannot work for something better. They need you hopeless. They need you scared. They need you to acquiesce. They attack your hope because without it you are disarmed. Find your quiet, find your peace, let hope grow, then work on what you are able.

I love how not one single adult at home, in school, in general public, or even law enforcement is ever like "hey uhhhhhhhh these are gangs and this is gang warfare San Fernando Valley is under literal siege by martial arts gangs doing gang warfare" and instead everyone is just like "we love karate!"
These suburban California kids are essentially in a state of total war with each other, up to and including storming one another's homes.
