Friction is good and one of the most consequential tasks facing the designers and managers of social-technical systems in the 21st century is putting it back in in the right ways and right places.
I think one of the lessons that the huge success of congestion pricing in NYC is that charging a nominal upfront fee- even one far less the the levellized cost you are paying for elsewhere- is very good at cutting off the bottom 5% of bad behavior that makes things worse for everyone.

I think there’s a broad hunger for this kind of shift and journalists/writers/podcasters should evangelize it aggressively. And we should say that it doesn’t need to be total: You don’t need a print newspaper to tone down the algorithm’s role in your life. mattdpearce.substack.com/p/four-big-t...

Update: it has been six fucking days and clippercard.com continues to error out at every attempt to login or reset password.
My Clipper 2.0 status: logged into clippercard.com, password I used Monday didn't work, hit "forgot password", got an error message on that too.

(I don't use any apps, just have a physical card hooked up to web account for auto-refills.)
Clipper 2.0 status: updated the Android app and the cards are gone and it's generally busted. Watch this space for more Clipper 2.0 news.

Stand By Me is a movie that means a lot to me. I wrote this last year after revisiting it. Along with The Princess Bride, it’s one of those movies that taught me, as a child and adolescent, about love and death in a deeply felt way that few movies can.

Rest in peace Rob Reiner.

A ★★★★½ review of Stand by Me (1986)
Entering early adolescence is more about grappling with mortality for the first time than most coming-of-age stories allow for. Steven King understands that. You turn twelve, and suddenly things start...

Massachusetts has ordered gas companies to prioritize shutting down leaky gas lines and installing heat pumps instead of replacing pipelines. Curious whether California PUC has taken the same steps (genuine question)
Six people were injured and three buildings were destroyed in a residential explosion and fire Thursday morning near Hayward in Alameda County, which happened hours after a construction crew hit an underground gas line.

“Environmental review is not planning” is one of those statements that is so obviously true but nearly every thing about transportation institutions and environmental review in California/US pushes against it.

Credit to Mikie for trying, but this is also a response that is deeply felt as a candidate whose donor base and background is living in Montclair, NJ, which I had to stop comparing Berkeley and Ann Arbor when i went home a couple years ago and realized we still had zero (0) bike lanes.
@thenewjerseyer.bsky.social has unearthed a crazy nugget here, from an interview with incoming NJ governor Mikie Sherrill. She clearly says that she stopped talking about building new housing, even though she thinks it's a good idea, because most every voter she spoke to hated the idea!! (1/5)

Following up on this. This remains a ‘cave is minutes or hours away’ situation. If you want to impact how this plays out you need to contact senators literally now. I want to add additional points of context. What I’m relaying is what I’ve picked up from highly reliable sources.
Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.
