I admire people who can still summon enough vigor to plead “how many more children have to die?” when the answer is clear. I try not to let emotional resignation be civic resignation, but it’s hard. America has made it so.

Where critics believe Billy Joel undermining his mean streak with earnestness makes him uncool, I think it’s his greatest strength.

Wrote about Billy Joel, being shaped by Long Island, and why his best song about New York isn't the one you think it is.

Hey, Some Thoughts About Billy Joel
This is technically not a post about being a dad, but it is a post about Billy Joel, which still sort of makes it a post about being a dad

I’ve seen a lot of kooky MLB realignment maps this week after Rob Manfred’s comments about expansion.

But hear me out: we don’t need new divisions, we need no divisions

Been watching 'And So It Goes' and I've got a hot Billy Joel take: His greatest anthem about New York is not New York State of Mind. It is Miami 2017. And it's not particularly close.

If you want to bring order and stability to your life, have a kid. Not joking! You could try every crash diet and fad workout only to find that parenting a toddler is actually nature's most effective wellness hack.

We need to build some real social stigma around being afraid of cities. You don't have to like them or live there, but a politics built this strongly around watching TV and going "ewww" is embarrassing, and people should be embarrassed by it. It's like "fear of werewolves" being your top issue.

Banana Ball is harmless and fun, but it’s not a replacement for the real thing. Those equivocating it with MLB as “diversions” fail to understand that traditional sports fandom is not rooted in seeking entertainment. I don't watch the Mets to distract myself. I do it because they are who I am.
Banana Ball is Not a Substitute for the Real Thing
No one can doubt the Savannah Bananas' popularity, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking it's something else

I'm tired of people saying pro sports need to be more like Banana Ball in order to survive, because my memories and the ones I'm creating for my son say otherwise.

The whole "MLB needs to be more like Banana Ball" discourse has driven me insane, because I've seen the blueprint for the last five years as a Mets fan and it's so simple. Just spend money to field a competitive roster and make the stadium experience good and affordable (that part still needs work)
From @theathletic.com: The Savannah Bananas have millions of fans and are seemingly growing at warp speed. Banana Ball is wacky, but it's also a competitive brand of baseball that prioritizes fun and fan experience. MLB can learn from it.
What can MLB learn from the Savannah Bananas? A lot, it turns out

When we enable private equity to hack up and destroy healthy traditional media, we become a country where billionaires can congeal these needlessly fractured assets into superconglomerates whose chief goal is to appease the autocrat who decides whether they can remain in the wealth hoarding business
The #1 way to explain America working properly is by saying “comedians can make fun of he President on TV.” A good way to explain fascism is “the President forces companies to fire those comedians as a condition of allowing them to conduct business.”

We talk a lot about how LeBron, Steph and KD are still the faces of the NBA, and the existential problem the NBA has on its hands when they retire. We also talk a lot about the NBA's unprecedented current period of championship parity. But we don't talk about how the latter has impacted the former.

I recently had an undergrad message me for career advice. When I gave it, his response began “Sure! Here’s a smoother version of that sentence.” He was apparently conversing with me through AI. There are probably many kids trying to break into media/marketing *not* doing this, but yeah, not great!
One thing that seems pretty insidious about even cheeky, low-level use of AI/chatgpt/are these the same I don’t even know is that it normalizes not thinking for yourself.

🗣️ Calling the Bill Simmons-Pablo Torre thing a "beef" is a hacky, lazy, dumb oversimplification. Simmons had an obvious blind spot on the Belichick story and took it out on Torre's reporting. But it was big of him to have Torre on his podcast to walk him through why the story matters.
